After seeing some debate about it in Favorite Scenes, I decided this deserved it's own topic. BEWARE THOSE WHO HAVE NOT SEEN THE MOVIE, MASSIVE SPOILERS AHEAD. Also, some not so pleasant mental imagery.
This will forever be one of the questions of HTTYD, How DID Hiccup end up losing his leg?
Did it get damaged when he was ripped off Toothless after smacking into Red Death's tail?
Did Toothless accidentally crush it in his teeth by grabbing him with his mouth? Or could he have crushed it when they landed?
What happened?

To restate my theory. For this thread. My theory is that while Hiccup was falling, Toothless caught him by that leg; the velocity probably shattered the knee joint or shin. And vikings, being vikings, don't exactly have the most modern of medical procedures... So off with the leg!

I mentioned on the 'fave scenes' thread that I think Toothless landed on Hiccup's leg when they crashed and mangled it beyond repair.
And it makes sense, too, if Toothless was the one to remove Hiccup's leg. I mean, Hiccup tore up Toothless' tail, after all. It's another bit of the echo.

I think either it got crushed in the landing, or maybe Toothless had to grab onto it before he got a better grip on Hiccup...therefore, had to bite pretty hard on his leg.
But that's pretty unlikely, when you think about it.

Why is that unlikely? It seems pretty possible to me...

Well, considering how Toothless was holding him, it seemed more likely he grabbed him with his legs and feet than with his mouth. The theory that he crushed the leg when they crashed makes more sense. To me, at least.

Well I'dunno, the way Hiccup's father rolled him over after the reveal seemed too easy if Toothless was laying on his leg... Then again... I could be remembering the scene wrong. xD

It think there's no real explination for it other than that the producers saw it would complete the "full circle/s" someone mentioned earlier: Hiccup made Toothless lose his left tail-wing, Toothless made Hiccup lose his left foot. BUT, Hiccup also helps Toothless to fly after that, and then Toothless helps Hiccup to walk. Two full circles!

It's a plethora of circles!
With the crash landing destroying Hiccup's leg theory, though, there's always the possibility that after Toothless crashed, he shifted a little to not be laying on his leg. owo

*winces at the THOUGHT of how that must feel* Ah, geez...MY leg's starting to hurt now...
Well, the more I thought about it, the more I felt that it just wouldn't work. I mean, sure, it was possible for Toothless to have grabbed Hiccup's leg in his mouth, but then how would he get him wrapped up in his arms/legs/wings? I just can't quite see it working. So yeah, I'm going with the theory that they landed on it. *noddles*

I personally think it was somewhat shatterd when the tail hit them, and then when Toothless grabbed himit caused it to shatter/move a bit more, and then finally when they hit the ground Toothless might have accidentlly landed or bounced on Hiccups leg, rolling and rolling on it(Even though he's prolly know covered by his wings, there would still be pressure on him.) cause more damage, leaving in....trashed and done.
....with lotsa blood.....

Erk... I don't know... I think Hiccup hit something on his way to the ground. Toothless had to have caught him, otherwise he'd have died, but I'm not going to make any solid theories until I see it again, though that may not be until it comes out on DVD (unfortunately)... which, knowing Australian distribution companies, could take from 3 months to 5-6 months... unless it does REALLY INCREDIBLY well here. Which I hope it does, the earlier it comes out, the better! Every time I go to find I DVD at home to watch all I can think about is dragons and how there's only one film I can think of that we have and I don't even like it that much! It's... er... torture may be a bit harsh... but I still don't like it!

*Just* came back to the movie and saw what happened to the leg. You have to really be paying attention because the split second after Toothless unfurls his wings to reveal Hiccup, the leg in question is crushed between Toothless' two back legs. Case closed. :]
