I still go back to the stirrup. Even if, looking at it, the designs are the same, that doesn't mean both feet will automatically get caught in the stirrup. It often happens with horseback riding. If you fall off, it's not guaranteed your foot will get caught in both stirrups. While it can happen, it's just as plausible to fall and have your foot stuck in one or the other. Again, completely speaking from experience here. I've seen my brother fall, and taken a few tumbles myself, when practice riding. These were at considerably more safe speeds, of course, and neither of us got more than a sprain.
At the speeds they were traveling, if he'd been knocked clear but one foot had gotten caught, it's quite possible to have shattered the bone, torn up the muscles, ligaments, or tendons, or pulled the bones completely out of socket. I've heard horror stories of people riding in jumping competitions and getting their legs caught like that, where they end up with severe compound fractures. It's not pretty.

I think that when they landed, the leg was broken badly, so much the bone could of been damaged beyond repair causing them to amputate Hiccup's leg.

I don't think toothless caused it, and I don't think that getting a foot caught in one of the stirrups caused it, or at least, not completely. I think his leg was shattered by the landing, either by toothless landing on him, or just the impact of hitting the ground.

I've considered this a lot with my boyfriend. He came up with Toothless grabbing his leg in his teeth and I think its reasonable, but...not completely.
Another theory I had was that his leg was burned by the fire and they cut it off since it was so bad, but then....that doesn't sound realistic.
I like the thought of it being crushed in the landing, and by how Toothless had Hiccup protected, maybe his legs had crushed it when they both landed.
I dunno.

Awwww... D: I didn't see that... I just assumed it got burned off, because... well... he fell into a giant fireball. ; Well, I just assumed that Hiccup just bumped onto a rock or any broken pieces from Green Death's body and broke his leg...

I'll stick with stormy's theory, but I also have another question. Hiccup still had his leg when he fell off toothless. But when they found him, Gobber specifically said "Almost all of him" Which leads me to think it was burned off, because it wasn't there! His foot had to've been gone for Gobber to say that. But a crushed leg IS a possibility

I beleive it was actually burnt off. You cant really see anything in camrips but after watching the movie a number of times in IMAX3D I'm pretty certain you can actually make out a burnt stump!

I think it was severely burned or crushed by Toothless catching him or whatever, many things could have happened and you can't really tell what did from just looking at the movie. The only people who'd know are the storywriters. But anyway, they had to cut if off because it was severely damaged, you know, amputation. I normally don't look too deep into a movie (read: deeper than the movie itself) because that tends to destroy the whole movie for me. I don't really like searching plotholes and stuff, I just enjoy the movie for what it is. ^^; Unless, of course, something is so obviously wrong that it annoys me, but that didn't happen at all with this movie.

I think that his leg was burnt severly and was just damaged beyond repair or anything and so it had to be cut off and replaced. I never really thought about the possibilty of Toothless landing on it or biting it off but I guess it could have just been a Toothless accident... I just believe that, since Hiccup fell into this giant explosion, that his foot was burned and had to be amputated. Poor guy... *huggles Hiccup*

On a rewatch of the movie (heheeee YouTube... > ), I also noticed that his leg was in between Toothless' legs, and you can see it for only a split second after he opens up his wings. There's a lot of really good theories here but I think the 'leg-caught-in-between-two-giant-dragon-legs-and-getting-crushed' theory is probably the most accurate. red

*Just* came back to the movie and saw what happened to the leg. You have to really be paying attention because the split second after Toothless unfurls his wings to reveal Hiccup, the leg in question is crushed between Toothless' two back legs. Case closed. :] Ouch! I did not know that was how it happend? I just thought maybe it was the way Hiccup landed. So, therefore he broke his leg in a way that could not be healed right and they had to amputate. But man when this movie comes out to dvd. I definitely got to check that part out.

I personally think that Hiccup's leg got severely burned in that fireball, either completely or just had to be amputated. Heck, I was surprised he didn't come out all completely deformed or dead from that whole scenario.

After reading all these theories, I feel like writing a one shot on just that part. No really, I would.

I've read fanfics where Hiccup ended up dead from the incident, but I wonder what would've happened if he ended up completely disfigured? I mean, he DID fall into a giant fireball. Man, that would probably REALLY mess him up both physically as well as emotionally.
