Gift of the Night Fury. Thanks for the correction Berk. I do not get angry unless my chars are stolen. No worries Berk, no worries.

It is my favourite of the shorts. I always found it amusing that Fishlegs, one of the smartest vikings and most certainly one of the most book smart, didn't know that Meatlug was a female when the twins told him she laid eggs.

" that actually explains a lot of things"...
But yeah. Boneknapper and Book of Dragons are supposed to be more lighthearted and funny. GOTNF also is supposed to be lighthearted, but it carries a deeper message.
You can taste the friendship. Its faintly similar to Yak.

I did wonder about Toothless discarding the fully functional tail.
Even if he wished to keep the old one, it would have been practical to keep the new one, just in case of emergencies.
Suppose Hiccup was captured and Toothless needed to come to the rescue?
All they would have to do is fit his fully functional tail and off he could go, without a rider.
There could be all kinds of scenarios like that, ones that would require Toothless to fly on his own and for those situations, I'd keep the functional tail ready to go, just in case it was needed.

True, but people rarely think of practicalities when deep emotions overcome them.

I have to wonder about dragons and their mates... how does that work. Do they form a bond? Because even though Stormfly, Meatlug, etc. had children... we don't really see some kind of Dragonish mate.
Actually, I have to wonder whether they even mate at all. Meatlug just sort of laid her eggs when locked up by Fishlegs. So unless some other Gronkle snuck in when Fish wasn't looking....
I mean, we see Hookfang sort of looking after a brood of little Monstrous Nightmares, so I have to assume that there is some sort of female mate he's matched with...
I dunno. It confuses me.

Yes, it would most likely require a mate.
But reptiles have a gestation period, although it's unlike a mammals.
Basically, once they become pregnant, it takes them some time to make the eggs inside their bodies.
So Meatlug could have mated prior to being locked up and laid the eggs when they were ready.
Also, I assume the Dragons actually mated in or around Berk and only departed when the time was near to lay their eggs.
As to who their mates are, we don't know, since we only see the lead dragons and the occassional Terrible Terror.

It's possible that they mated prior to the events of HTTYD period.

This actually makes sense. I had watched GOTNF before, but only when I watched it again with a friend, and she pointed it out to me, did I actually realise. I literally just sat there, frozen, for a full on minute, before I was just like 'Holy mumma'. It really confused me for a bit there. Thanks

Hah I loved this movie!
One moment that I remember is the scene where Hiccup tries Astrid's "Yaknog." When Astrid is leaving, he looks at her butt. I saw this in a meme so I had to go rewatch it. This scene, along with many others scattered throughout, proves that Dreamworks animators have very dirty minds.
