...What just happened? Sorry, I was away. Can someone explain? The Big Crunch. In all seriousness, two things: a plot leak and a photo leak. The plot leak covered first two thirds of the film while the photo leak revealed 3D models of Hiccup, Astrid, and new characters + concept art stuff. I'm guilty for one of them.

Are the two leaks somehow related or even from the same person? The photos are pretty harmless compared to a plot leak...

Plot leak? My my... that's much more serious.
At the same time, I'm worried about knowing.
Please tell me it's not what's on the Wikipedia page?

Are the two leaks somehow related or even from the same person? The photos are pretty harmless compared to a plot leak... I'm guilty for one of them, as in, I know the whole plot up to right before the climax; or, I leaked it. There. I mean, AFAIK I have taken down every public post where I talked about the spoiler-worthy points, so I'm just gonna admit that I did it. There was an intense "brodown" that happened over this through the last weekend, as Tumblr posts from last Friday or so will prove. I thought the photo leak was a pretty big one. One of the pictures contains the character that is supposed to be a HUGE surprise plot-wise. There is a picture that shows a major plot point word-by-word. The new looks of characters, etc. etc. Which, by the way, does fit in quite well with the information that I have. Please tell me it's not what's on the Wikipedia page? The one on Wikipedia's page is a direct transcription of one of the photos. It isn't even CLOSE to covering the full synopsis, but what little amount of plot points it contains is not incorrect. Very much incomplete, but not fabricated. Ohhhh my... If someone really wants deeper info regarding this stuff, I Could Teach You, But I'd Have To Charge.... kidding.

As much as I feel somewhat bad learning about it early, knowing that I don't know something kills me. At least, when I know that I -can- know it.
Gah. This is all driving me quite insane.
How'd you get these leaks anyways?
Somebody brief me!

So yeah... how did you get that information?

It was a paid survey that I took last week, which pretty much gave me the complete info about plot, cast, and even character models to an extent. I ended up copying only a part of the synopsis but I have excellent memory so I could summarize most of the movie. The reason why I leaked the info is that the survey didn't show me a nondisclosure agreement contract that shows up in a lot of movie surveys.

So you got paid to give an early review of the movie? Awesome, but the price is a spoiled movie I guess.
And what kind of info did you get for the character models? Just text and images?

I didn't really care about the plot anyway (I mean, if you go into a 3D animation primarily for the plot, it might be better to read). A lot of DreamWorks's magic is how they execute their insane premises so well, from characters to visuals and etc., so I am still looking forward to what they'll bring in 2014.
I got to see the 3D-rendered images of each of the main characters, including the surprise character. Not super high-res, but it was enough for me to imagine how they would look like on the big screen. SOOOOOEXCITINGGGG

Wait, how in the world did you get this survey...er...thing?
Anyways, the plot of the movie is the most important to me, hands down. Characters and emotions rank pretty much close/equal to the plot, but all of these things trump massively over things such as animation, resolution or even music (although Music is a big part of portraying the aforementioned in HTTYD, so it is important). All of these things are important to me really. The animation, voice work, music, resolution, etc. is how the story of the movie is told. It's important to have it be, well, good. And appropriate. But it's the plot/character that means most to me. If it was weak there then the rest doesn't quite matter to me.

Well then get ready for a ride, because the plot can be turned into something so much more than the first film. It has much more width and depth, and the story gives room for more edge and grit. I would say that the core plot doesn't has as much charm as the first movie's does, but I'm sure DWA will find a way to add some sparkle.
I thought the first movie had an almost archetypal plot. It's not really a cliche as it is a trope, but I saw through the typical progression of "Everything we know is wrong" during the first thirty minutes of the film. What I consider to be the saving grace, or sometimes even the locomotive, is the sonic experience behind the visuals, from the voice acting, the SFX, to the masterfully crafted score. Maybe I hold onto sound too much (as I did when I watched There Will Be Blood), but the more I study the HTTYD score, the more I get the impression that it contributes SO much to the coherence of the movie. Powell has so few themes but uses them so dynamically and extensively that you might hear one and never realize it's a returning melody. Test Drive, for example, has an ABA' structure, A representing the test flight, B representing the chaos ("Cheat Sheet!"), and A' representing triumph. The A' section returns at the end of the movie as Hiccup and Toothless start to fly, which I think is a genius way to signify the kind of glory. Of course, all the themes in the A' section were already given in the first minute of the movie (albeit by different instruments in a different meter and mood), so it could also be thought of as a representation of how much Berk has changed, a contrast that runs in parallel with the fact that the movie starts at night time but ends in a sunny mid-day. Of course, I'm also an over-analyzer.
I'm sure the survey quota's been already filled, so there's probably no point in me going deeper on that subject.

But still, how did you get into it? Im fascinated.
Anyways, right. Powell's music was instrumental (pun not intended until I realized that I'd made it) in conveying the tone and the emotion of the story. Which I find quite valid. The creators mentioned that in many parts (the bonding-in-the-quarry scene, the test flight scene, the romantic ride scene, etc.) that they wanted to use the music, as well as the visuals, to relay something about the story that transcended dialogue's ability; or at least its effectiveness in this given way. HTTYD certainly wouldn't have been what it was without the visuals and music, as they did tell the story. But in the end I believe it is that story and those characters and the feel and meaning behind it that makes HTTYD so great, and I'm hoping that the creators stay true to maintaining it.
I have confidence. Sequels are the ultimately sanity-breaker for me. On one hand, I want them because I want more of the story and more of the awesomeness. On the other hand, it can be risky, and I go insane worrying about the creators doing it, well, right, I suppose.

I use a couple of survey aggregation sites to kill some spare time and earn a few shekels. The HTTYD one I clicked to through a third-party aggregator on a site called Swagbucks. These surveys are pretty much commissioned by one company (DWA in this case), designed by another (a market research company), and linked to by a third company. I think I once had to take a survey on a sequel to Snow White and the Huntsman, which bored me to death. So I expected some blockbuster-type movie for the survey I was linked to, but I began to feel that they were looking for someone into animations, as it asked for whether I watched movies like Toy Story, Monsters Inc., etc. Then, it asked me if I saw HTTYD, Kung Fu Panda, or the Croods, I went "No, this can't be." And.... the text on the screen read "You will now read the information on How To Train Your Dragon 2." It's probably the first time I wanted to scream ERMAHGERD as a genuine exclamation of joy.
I think of HTTYD 1's main conflict as two-fold: the Dragon-Viking war on the surface, and Hiccup's dilemma caused by this as he has to be a Viking but also befriend a Night Fury. So essentially, one external and one internal conflict.
And I'm happy to report that AFAIK, HTTYD 2 will also feature one external and one internal conflict as its big engine. Only this time, it's bigger, blacker edgier, and just more awesome.
