Taken from: www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=65516DreamWorks Animation announced today as part of its First Quarter financial results that a sequel to How to Train Your Dragon will hit theaters in 2013.
"2010 is off to a strong start, thanks in large part to the performance of 'How to Train Your Dragon,' which – having grossed nearly $375 million to date in worldwide box office – has become DreamWorks Animation's next franchise. We plan to release the sequel theatrically in 2013," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, CEO of DreamWorks Animation. "3D continues to have a tremendous impact on the industry at large and we are now looking forward with great anticipation to bringing 'Shrek Forever After,' the final chapter in our beloved 'Shrek' series and the first in 3D, to audiences across the globe next month."
How to Train Your Dragon, which was released on March 26, 2010, contributed $59.7 million of revenue to the quarter for the company, driven primarily by merchandising and licensing activities. It has reached approximately $180 million in domestic box office and approximately $195 million in international box office to date. I saw the same news on IMDB. I am really excited, to say the least. I just hope they don't mess it up; sequels usually are never as good as the first movie. So I guess we have three years to wait!...

...Great. ...Really... :/ I'm not looking forward to it... Dreamworks is probably the worst at making sequels. I thought the movie was wonderfully wrapped up. Sure I love the characters but I think it's fine just as a stand alone.

I guess that they'll just keep making movies off the books. I just hope that they won't mess this up like the Shrek series.

I'm of two minds on this. On one hand OMFGSQUUUEEEEE!! on the other hand, they could ruin it, turning it into a mockery of itself. Yes Shrek 3 I'm looking directly at you. All I can hope is that they bring back Chris and Dean. They'll make sure it's done right. If not I just hope whoever they do get stays away from the obvious. The obvious being, a female night fury, Astrid and Hiccup getting into a fight over a misunderstanding, and/or Astrid's parents hating Hiccup. Just leave that crap for lousy fanfiction.

I read someplace that Chris and Dean are on the sequel project.
As long as they keep the original characters, original voices (as long as the cast remains healthy) and the dragon's dont end up talking....then we'll see...

Honestly? I probably won't get that excited about it until I hear more. I really feel like HTTYD got everything right. If it continues in that same vein and it works with the plot they established in this movie, fantastic! If not... well, sequels don't always satisfy. *cough*Shrek movies *cough* Spiderman 3*cough*

Hm... I'm of a mixed mind on this. I mean, the second Shrek was decent. I liked it better than the first, really.
But at the same time, there's the Madagascar sequel. Ugh.
I will withhold judgment.

1) SWEEEEEEEEEET
2) I hope it's somehow connected to How To Be A Pirate.
3) All the fears listed above.

Most everyone already said it, and I too have mixed feelings about this. I absolutely love this movie, and adore its characters, but the film itself was very well-rounded and ended nicely, with absolutely no need to continue.
Just the way that article read to me, it basically told me that Dreamworks hasn't pulled themselves outta the rut yet. It's still "Oh this movie made ex-amount in the box office, so SURELY people will go see a SEQUEL and that'll make MOAR $$$!! 8DDD"
As long as Jeffrey Katzenberg keeps his paws off of this deal, I might go see HtTYD 2. I went to see HtTYD 3 times to hopefully relay the message that they've done something good for themselves this time around, then they stab us in the back with a sequel to a movie that was so good, it can stand alone; unlike quite a few of Dreamworks' previous features, with the exception of a few.
Dean and Chris, please get back on this project and save us.
Grahhhh, need more info before I take a final position on this. 8C

I kinda hope they don't base it off the how to be a pirate book.. maybe ninjas XD No I kid. But I can't imagine that being actually made is the problem, like, if he's a pirate/sailor[ya know, I'm not sure] whats the point of a dragon :/ We all see the problem here
But overall, I'll have high hopes for it. and hopefully they'll do better than the last few Shrek movies. I mean, the 1st AND 2nd ones were good, but I've heard 2 more should be coming out [One about Puss in Boots: Ogre Killer and the new one] But swear to god, they better get like some mega-awesome plot for the 2nd one. Cause the first one left me in awe, the second one should be like, -speechless-. HOPEFULLY it won't spawn any fan-fic plots or anything. THe best could be maybee, I unno, threats from other islands and maybe one of the main characters gets captured? If they have a good line of thought, they could make that into something awesome
But I must agree with Bane on this one

Plot line I am theorizing: the dragons talk (god please help us if they do, that was the one thing I liked about this movie was that they didn't talk) which I can picture a seen between Hiccup and Toothless: "YOU CAN TALK?!" "I CAN TALK?! Huh. I can talk." If not the dragons talking, then of course I expect Astrid and Hiccup to get into a fight because couples can NEVER be totally happy in a sequel.
Alvin the Treacherous or his movie equal attacks Berk? Possibly with a band of pirates... I can see Toothless and/or Astrid getting hurt or kidnapped, leaving Hiccup to rescue one of them, whichever one it is, entirely alone. Giving him more of a 'coming of age' movie line.

Giving him more of a 'coming of age' movie line. Yeah, like, They kidnapp Astrid and the whole village is like 'OMGEE SAVE HER HICCUP -points-' And probably not cause he has too, Hiccup is all heroic and saves her or something. Or their village just gets terrorized and he has to scare them off. Either way, I'm REALLY confused on any idea with pirates
