I think it would be interesting. Personally, I agree he should be a he. But it won't kill the franchise for me if he's not.
And to make a point, even of toothless was female, he wouldn't have laid eggs in gift. Simply because she would have been the only night fury there. it still takes two dragons To make eggs. Not to mention toothless never went to the breeding island, so there's that as well. And as far as characters identifying gender incorrectly, fishlegs thought that meatlug was male and she laid eggs, so it's possible for them to have misidentified toothless as well.

. I honestly don't see anything "interesting" if that were to happen. I see it as a very bad move in their part.
