After seeing a specific scene in What Flies Beneath and also thinking of Toothless' ability to navigate by sonar, I started to wonder if those podfrill things (don't know what to call them specifically, sorry) actually serve a purpose related to sound.
In the movie, we see them shift around in respond to the homing signal of the Green Death.
In What Flies Beneath, they start shifting around when Toothless hears the Whispering Death tunneling beneath the village. His hearing must be particularly acute, considering it's under the ground and he's on the second level of the house!
Generally speaking, any creature that navigates by sonar pulses requires a large surface area because the sound may not always bounce directly back towards them from whatever they are pulsing at. The larger the surface area, the higher chance the echopulse will hit your head.
Which makes me wonder, is the purpose the podfrills serve for Toothless, are they there to increase the surface area of his head for his sonar ability?
Given that they move around when he listens to sounds as well (much like an animal lifting up it's ears to hear better/more clearly), I would assume they're also augmenting his hearing in addition to his sonar.

I just noticed--All of the Dragons greatly resemble their riders in personality--Except for Toothless and Hiccup. I mean: Stormfly and Astrid - Feminine Warriors, Kinda Vain, Short Tempered... Hookfang and Snotlout - Overly Prideful, not the brightest among Dragons/People... Twins and Barf/Beltch - Constantly Bickering... (Nothing more to these characters really :/) Fishlegs and Meatlug - Large(Chubby?), Extremely Emotional, Not fighters Toothless and Hiccup - Smartz That's really it. I mean, Hiccup is rather shy and modest while Toothless is hilariously prideful, and the greatest warrior of his species while Hiccup is... Not. Does anyone else notice this? If you look at a post I made in a seperate thread, against the Green/Red death, he must have fired at least 11 shots: howtotrainyourdragon.proboards.com/thread/1461/night-fury-screaming-death?page=2&scrollTo=80865
