From a thriller to a drama-horror movie... Interesting choice. I don't know if the reference to the films really has anything to do with the content or just playing with movie titles, but apparently What Lies Beneath was distributed by DreamWorks Pictures while No Country for Old Men wasn't, so that could have something to do with it.

This episode, I think, was pretty great.
For those of you who want to see more about the dragons themselves, I think this does a great job at showing off Toothless. Even Toothless completely irregardless of Hiccup. He has history now.
And you know what else is great? There's still history. That dragon isn't gone yet. It can still come back. And they never exactly explained the history to us. So I hope for a repeat appearance one day...
The downside to the dragons again though is the others still seem sort of one-dimensional... except of course for when they all stand down during the fight.
There were also some other nice touches... the tooth, the injury... Toothless making his fire bed, which I thought was definately impressive as a nice little touch.
Hm... what else am I missing. Snotlout "going there" was kind of funny and suprising.
The falling off the cliff scene was definately epic... but we need better music, really.
We shall see about the return of the *lowers voice* Whispering Death....
Now come, let us discuss.

I'll use my analysis I posted on Tumblr:
Oh my God that episode…
It was great. I loved it. One of my favorites so far. WELL worth the wait.
First of all, the Whispering Death was SO COOL. The fight scenes between (him? her?) and Toothless were freaking awesome. And Toothless actually got wounded this time!
Plus, there was character development galore! We get to find out some of Toothless’s past, and how he deals with problems like this. There was a ton of really cool developments between him and Toothless’s relationship. We also got to see some more of Hiccup’s stubornness issues, and how far he’ll go to protect Toothless. Hell, we even got a teeny bit of Snotlout and Fishlegs, I thought.
The other dragons were actually given some form of intelligence, I thought (“They know this isn’t their fight!”).
I wish I could say more, but I have to get going, my friend is calling me. I’ll just wrap it up by saying this was an epic episode once again.

Well feel free to return when you have more time.
Yeah, this really was the "Toothless" episode.
I'm also interested in continuing to explore the cave system under Berk. It's been mentioned before... and now apparently someone else is adding to it.

Liked the episode, but I just felt like the 3D work was done in a bit of a haste. Couple of places where color grading felt lifeless ( I mean, it's cloudy the whole time, but it still looked a bit too sterile) and a couple of animation quirks. But then again, I'm an expert at nitpicking.

The falling off the cliff scene was definately epic... but we need better music, really. The flight theme did play when they took flight a moment after. The music, accompanied with the sound of Toothless' wing beats, really expressed the joy of being airborne once again. I felt so elated watching that scene.

It had a darker sense to it, and featured a seemingly more one dimensional story than usual. Not that I didn't enjoy it, worth the wait!

I really enjoyed the newest episode. My favorite part was probably the cliff scene, since it reminded me of the end of the movie. But, really, the whole show was fantastic.
Got to go to bed soon, so I'll try to add more later.

I just watched this episode. Very powerful! There's a trend in this series that continues with this episode. A rapid succession of emotions. One moment, you're , the next you're , and then you're . Like, the part where Toothless shoots at Hiccup and then Tuffnut pops in: "Awkward." I also loved the character development here and a hint at Toothless' backstory. Maybe it has something to do with why Toothless is the only Night Fury we've seen.

A couple observations:
1) Showing the world from the dragon's POV is new, as far as I can recall. I think this was to demonstrate how the Whispering Death (WD) was "looking" for toothless.
2) Speaking of the WD, this episode portrayed it as by far the most intelligent dragon besides Toothless. It quickly recognized Toothless's handicap, cornered Toothless on the plateau, and then tried to knock him off. There was also a point where the WD appeared to single out hiccup in an attack (though this is open to interpretation), suggesting that it made the connection between Hiccup and Toothless.
3) Toward the end, Hiccup remarks that "not all dragon grudges are to the death." This strikes me as a premature observation. Sure, Toothless was able to hold off the killing blow, but Hiccup has no way of knowing that this is anything more than a short truce.
4) Toothless needs to fly but doesn't want Hiccup around? How can they possibly solve this problem? Oh yeah, that brilliant tail from Gift of the Night Fury that they threw away -_-
5) That last point was more of a personal gripe than critique of the story. Having the autonomous tail (can I coin that phrase? I like it) wouldn't have fit with the overarching theme of the episode, which is the interdependence of Hiccup and Toothless.
I'm probably putting more thought into this analysis than I should be. Oh well.

4) Toothless needs to fly but doesn't want Hiccup around? How can they possibly solve this problem? Oh yeah, that brilliant tail from Gift of the Night Fury that they threw away -_- I was thinking about that modified tail fin, too. It didn't bother me much, though. After all, one can only expect 20/20 hindsight. I'm sure we've all thrown away something and later on find ourselves in a situation where we think: "You know, that thing I threw away would certainly come in handy right now."

Yeah, I was somewhat cracking up to myself upon seeing that. 'He's probably thinking "You know... probably shouldn't have destroyed that tail..."' Hm... so much to consider.
