I also thought of the tail fin from GotNF, but I was thinking that Hiccup could make another one. I mean, it didn't take him long to make the first one, and that was all guess work; he'd probably have a better grasp on the concept this time around.
Then again, that probably would have made things too easy/less dramatic. I liked the way the episode turned out anyway. Like I said, the cliff scene was so awesome.

So about the autonomous tail... "The show is meant to take place directly after the film, while the special is implied to take place well after that." - tvtropes.org tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/WesternAnimation/DragonsRidersOfBerkI'm not sure exactly what evidence this statement is based on, but it would explain why the tail wasn't an option. -R

Plus if we go by that Gift of the Night Fury is unfortunately not canon...

And, Fishlegs didn't know Meatlug was a girl in Gift of the Night Fury whereas, in the series, he always refers to her as "she".

An expanded version of the earlier quote does address those inconsistencies:
"The series takes a few cues from the special Gift of the Night Fury. The show is meant to take place directly after the film, while the special is implied to take place well after that. Among the details used are the fact that Meatlug is female and that dragon eggs explode, both of which were surprises in the special."
But these are written off as plot holes and mistakes by the writers.
I should also point out that, in GotNF, Hiccup describes the dragon war as being "long over", while the show is (for the most part) about the immediate ramifications of dragons living among vikings.
To me, the timeline of Movie --> Show --> GotNF makes sense. Who's right? That's anybodies guess.

There are many reasons. When grudges occur most of the time people don't want help. It's not so much about "Well I could definately win with Hiccup's help" so much as "I need to win this myself"
Regarding GotNF.... does it really matter when it takes place? Quite honestly I don't think so. It's a holiday special.
It could even take place during the series for all we know.

That means that the movie, and every episode of (most probably) all 3 seasons of RoB would happen in a year or less. Damn, that's an awful lot for one year.

At the beginning of the movie, while yelling at Hiccup, Stoic says winter is "almost here". Clearly, it's winter in GotNF. Reminds me of M*A*S*H smooshing eleven seasons into three years. I'll continue putting GotNF between movie and show. Far less inconsistencies that way.

It could even take place during the series for all we know. Or, just a crazy thought, it could take place during the series. During the series, but before Stoic gets his dragon. That would fix a lot of things. You're a genius.

Perhaps.
Anyways, I mean, the core thing to realize here is that it's a holiday special. It's meant to actually happen but it's more about the warm fuzzy holiday feelings than any important plot development.

Watching this episode for a second time, I noticed that when Fishlegs read from the Book of Dragons about the Whispering Death, he actually opened the book and read from the page on Night Furies. This is strange, because in both the movie and the shorts, the Night Fury has two full pages opened for its information, rather than just one. So essentially, Fishlegs read the wrong entry.

It seems to fit, and also goes with the continuity that stoick doesnt have a dragon.
