It seemed to have gone so fast since winter had ended it's shift in the natural balance of a year. Overnight, the time began to cross into another special time; the Summer solstace.
Waer padded across the mossy grounds of the forest, fully awake and alert. The heat of the sunlight struck across her scales as they danced through the trees. The dragoness could hear birds chirping intentively to impress one another.
But like yesterday, the nadder was once again curious to see Aldis. She lifted her head, nostrils flaring as she sniffed the air, consuming the mixes of forest blend and other animals. Waer picked up the scent of Aldis; faint, but fresh.
She picked up the pace as she was lead by the familiar smell, towards the hot springs.

Aldis had felt a little anxious, a tad uncertain. What if someone noticed she was gone? What if Waer didn't turn up? But she needn't have worried, she soon heard the click of claws on stone. She looked up to see Waer padding over to her. "Hey, girl..." Aldis said, slightly tense. She paused to stare at the dragon for a bit, before throwing a piece of meat to her and saying "here."
She paused to let the dragon eat, then decided to tell the dragon what had happened. Aldis was still not fully convinced that Waer could properly understand her, but she felt like confiding her troubles in someone anyway. "Waer, there's been a... a dragon attack. In the village." Aldis purposely did not mention that it was her father who had been attacked. "It's not exactly minor... and... people are upset about it. They won't hesitate to kill any dragon they see doing wrong... I'm afraid the truce is getting tense, in our village, at least. I'm not sure how long it'll be 'til people stop telling me that I should befriend a dragon, and start telling me to kill one." She said wearily. "But its not like I'll listen to 'em" she added hastily "I never did before, why would I start now?"
Nevertheless, she sat, feeling worried. She wished that for one afternoon, she could just relax and have fun with Waer, instead of constantly worrying.

Waer silently began to eat the meat, taking it slowly from Aldis' hand as the human began to speak. Although she had been focusing on eating, her attention was caught when Aldis had mentioned the words "dragon attack" within her explaination.
"It's not exactly minor... and... people are upset about it. They won't hesitate to kill any dragon they see doing wrong..."
Waer's interest flicked upward, her head turning to the side as she focused a yellow eye onto Aldis, her horns slightly tilting at the movement.
I'm afraid the truce is getting tense, in our village, at least. I'm not sure how long it'll be 'til people stop telling me that I should befriend a dragon, and start telling me to kill one."
Waer let out a strange growl, almost like a short, faint purr. As much as she couldn't understand a lot of human language, she could see the worry upon Aldis' eyes. She grunted, tilting her head to the side. She started pacing around, as if searching for something.
Finally, spotting a small rabbit grazing hastily in the brush, the small Nadder let out a puff of smoke; before snagging her sharp kanines deep into the skin of the animal. Seconds later, after briskly shaking the caught mammal, Waer padded torwards the girl, claws tapping against the girl, before letting out another short grunt, and dropping the prey at Aldis' feet.
Waer snorted, making a short gesture of her head, encouraging the small gift to confort the human.

"Er.... thanks" Aldis said as she saw the gift the dragon had brought her, managing a smile. She picked up the dead rabbit, and stood up, holding it, and hoping awkwardly that Waer did not expect her to do anything like eat it right at that minute.
Looking up curiously, and placing the rabbit aside on a rock, Aldis slowly began to approach the dragon, reaching her arm out. She still longed to touch the dragons beautiful, vividly coloured scales. She wondered what they felt like; she had that dragons had spots, like dogs, that caused them to kick their back legs (or something along those lines, she thought vaguely) when they were scratched.
"Nadders!" Aldis looked up, to see a boy she had never seen before inspecting his fingernails, as though he were talking to himself, and not to her. Usually she would dismiss most people who acted this way; they were often full of themselves, and not so easy to talk to. "What about them?" Asked Aldis, making sure not to look too interested. Yes, he was the vain type... it worked. His head snapped down in her direction, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw him scowl slightly. "You should pay more attention to what people have to say." He said coolly. She snorted. "trust me, I do pay attention. But only to the ones worth listening to." He didn't seem to have a come-back to this, and his nostrils flared. Instead, he continued what he had been saying in the first place. "Nadders. The most beautiful, yet most vain, of all dragons." "Well" Replied Aldis "It looks like you and Nadders have something in common." He looked startled, then puffed out his chest a little. "Well, yes, I guess I could be described as beautiful." "That wasn't what I meant..." It took him a second to realize that she'd been calling him vain. He stomped off in a huff. Aldis later found out that he'd been from another village, visiting Berk.
So Nadders were vain? 'Maybe I'll keep that in mind' she thought, vaguely, the small Nadder in front of her not exactly striking her as vain - although she had only encountered a vain human before, so she wouldn't have known.

Although the nadder let out a sudden growl as Aldis reached out her palm to stroke the blue scales, as the hand grew closer, the dragoness suddenly grew calmer. Such a strange feeling, she never let a human pet her. But here it was. She wondered herself; how did a human's skin feel like? Without scales, and covered with fuzzy coats to keep them warm in the chilly nights, she wondered what kind of skin they had.
Was like feathers? Was it like fur? No. Finally, she nudged foward, allowing Aldis to stroke her scales. She calmed down, letting a short grunt as she tilted her head, almost beginning for a relaxing scratch under her chin. The nadder let out a short "Gfffft.", her tail wagging slowly as she flapped her wings excitedly.
Snap
Suddenly, a loud snap deep inside the forest brush caught the nadder's attention. Waer turned her head, her amber eyes eyeing the bushes as she let out a short and faint "Gearrro.."

(sorry it took me so long to reply; I was travelling to my dads, and was pretty busy.. its pretty far away.) Aldis was a little surprised as Waer pushed forward; after the nerve-racking growl the dragon had given, she had been expecting Waer to pull away or fly off (in the best scenario). She smiled at the dragons reaction to being stroked after she (and Waer) had calmed down. In a way, it reminded her of a dog being petted and enjoying it very much, yet it was different.
Her scales were not rough, as she had expected; they were overlapping so tightly that they almost created one smooth surface. It was unlike touching any other creature - even a dead lizard she had once touched felt nothing like this.
Then, suddenly, the Nadder's head snapped in the direction of a loud sound from inside the forest. Aldis froze. She turned her head slowly, looking in the direction the sound had come from. "Waer! What is it...?" She half-whispered, multiple horrible speculations coming to mind of what it could be.

(Eet's okay :3)
Waer flarred her nostrils, letting scents breach her nose as she took in information. A growl was let out in caution as her thoughts came into point. She slowly began to rattle her tail carefully, spikes very carefully tilting upward.
"Waer! What is it...?"
The dragoness could finally make out the moving patterns of a moving object. Smoke began to rise of the Nadder's mouth in defence, backing afront Aldis protectively. Raising her tail.
A sudden second, and in a heartbeat, a huge red dragon lashed out from the brush, it's huge jaws snapping madly. It was a Monstrous Nightmare, having stalked into the area to claim the territory.

One of her worst fears confirmed, Aldis froze, horrified; She had expected a dragon, but not a Monstrous Nightmare. These dragons had a reputation for having a temper with anyone but their human, although even to their human they were snappy. Aldis briefly wondered what the result of an angry wild Monstrous Nightmare would be, but pushed the thought away, knowing that soon, she would probably find out.
Waer was standing protectively in front of Aldis, whose brain had frozen. What did she do now? She could try and run, but the dragon would probably chase her. She was about to ask Waer to lure the dragon away, or hold it off while she ran, when she realized sickeningly that she would lead it to the village if she did this.
Apart from the obvious prospect of a villager getting hurt, it was likely another dragon attack would mean a fall-out between dragons and vikings alike. Warm steam from the hot-springs still wafted around Aldis and Waer, and something that one of the elders of the village had mentioned passively came to her.
"Well, water is very valuable, see." He had scolded some younger children who had been having a water fight as Aldis rushed past. "Back when dragon were our enemies, a good bucket of water over their heads would stop them from breathing fire, right and good it worked! Now, the Hideous Zipplebacks, they pose a problem..." His voice trailed off as Aldis walked out of ear-shot.
Maybe that would work! Hurriedly, Aldis looked around; she saw a few things littering the ground, but none that could help her. Then she saw it. Just out of arm-reach was a piece of bark that had broken off a tree, and would make a good bowl. If she could only reach it...
In one swift movement, Aldis had leapt next to the hot spring, grabbed the bark, filled it with water, and darted around Waer to throw it at the Nightmares face. The now drenched nightmare fixed her with a haughty stare, and made an odd noise which Aldis thought sounded quite like hissing. The dragon was obviously not very happy.
Aldis whipped around, intending to run back behind the safety of Waer, but was only barely quick enough. The dragons claw scraped her arm, ripping her shirt and causing her to bleed. She bit her tongue, but ended up letting out a strangled kind of "Ow!" This was all over in a quick chain of movements that only took about three seconds.

Waer let out a hiss as Aldis made a turn for the springs, setting of the beast into a lunge. As the Nightmare turned for the human's arm, the Nadder let out a loud "Cheeiah!", letting a spread of her wings as she kicked her back legs, sinking into the dragon's shoulder.
The nightmare released his grip, hissing in pain as he attempted to snag the smaller dragon's leg. The nadder let go almost immediately in response, landing onto the dirt as her foe circled her, letting out simultaneous growls as it's forked tongue stuck out.
Waer let out constant chatters, her tail quils rattling loudly. The beast struck, clicking his fangs as he attempted his lunge. The runtish Nadder screeched, lashing her tail into the eyes of the Nightmare.
The Nightmare let out a bellow of pain, desperately trying to wipe away venomous quils from his eyelids. In seconds, the monster opened a swolen, watery eye, and hissed manically. With a puff of smoke, it let out it's tongue, trying to ignite huge bursts of inferno.
To the monster's dismay, it's damp body did nothing about only steam, only cool, black smoke arising from it's mouth. The nightmare let out an enraged roar, having not able to use the flames to evaporate the venom, and swiped it's huge claws at the Nadder's face.

Aldis had no weapons on her, a foolish thing indeed, for even though the times when danger from dragons had - supposedly - passed, there were other dangerous things in the forest. She could not run; it would draw the dragons attention to her. How would she get away, without the Nadder getting seriously hurt? Sure the Monstrous Nightmare would hurt the small Nadder!
A thought, wild, not thought through, flickered into Aldis's head, of climbing onto the dragons back and swooping away, but she knew this was not possible. At least it can't breathe fire She thought, slightly relieved at this though, and feeling more so when she saw Waer use her deadly tail.
She tensed again as the dragon lunged out at Waer with his claws, and hoped that they would not meet with the Nadder's flesh. Surely Waer would be alright, now she had the advantage? Aldis desperately hoped so. She moved as close as she could to Waer without getting in the way of the battle.

Waer let out a yelp as a flailing claw scrapped across her cheek. Blue scales were scent flying onto the dirt, some slightly sprinkled with crimson blood. The dragoness jumped back, screeching as the blind Nightmare hissed with agitance.
The opponent snorted, trying to find it's prey blindly, it's forked tongue tasting the air vividly. Waer grunted with frustration, backing towards Aldis in protection. As the monster confirmed the smells with his tongue, the Nightmare let out a roar. In this fear, came an idea.
Waer bucked upward, before lowering her body down until her stomach touched the dirt. Her amber-yellow eyes looked straight into the human's.

A heartbeat passed; it felt like hours, but it was only a moment. Aldis was unsure of what the dragon wanted; she thought she knew... but if she was wrong, then this would be deadly... Without another thought, Aldis made her decision. She put her foot on a rock, and climbed up onto Waer's back.
If this isn't what she wanted... I'm dead. "Let's go, Waer!" She cried, trying to find somewhere to place her hands as she did so. Now she would either be killed, or go for the ride of her life...

At first, the weight seemed strange on her back. But then, after a few seconds, it seemed to tie. With a spread of her wings, the dragoness let a huge flap, air swiping under her body to take her afloat.
The nightmare, blind by the venom, desperately tried to claw upon the nadder's leg. A bare miss, as the dragoness managed to take the air high enough. With a huge roar, Waer desperately tried to take off, but the new weight of Aldis would take time to get used to. But that wasn't her fear; the dragoness would beg that Aldis was hanging on tight.
Finally, the Nightmare grew dry, shaking off the remains of water before beginning to spark flames on the tips of his tongue. In split seconds, his entire back began to smoke...before the horrid sight ignited, literally. The beast was engulfed in a red inferno, before beginning to shoot flamethrowers wildly and aimlessly...
A wildfire was spreading. Waer could only fly and hope she could be fast enough to elude the quickly rising smoke.
