I'm wondering this because before I saw the movie, a: I didn't realise it was based off a book series, and b: I actually had some theories on the characters before I saw it.
I know it's kinda hard to discuss theories AFTER the movie has come out, but I remember thinking about the movie very differently before I saw it. It'll probably be easier to give theories if you didn't read the books, but at the same time, I'd like to hear your input.
My theory about the movie was actually that Hiccup and Astrid were best friends. In the trailers, it didn't exactly give away that there were only 6 kids with Dragon Training. So I thought there was a large class... and Ruffnut was a popular girl with her own posse (blind Welcome did not notice that Tuffnut was a boy), who would in normal circumstances undermine Hiccup. Astrid would be the best friend that secretly likes him but prefers to deny it, even to himself.
So Hiccup would find Toothless, and then have a very hard time not telling Astrid his secret. Finally, he shows her what's been going on and takes her for a ride. Astrid would realise that she can no longer deny the feelings she had for Hiccup, or something like that.
And, of course, like the romantic I am, I though if that was the case, Hiccup would be oblivious to Astrid's feelings until the end.. and then there would be an adorkably cute moment between them.
Obviously, my idea of the movie was very different, and if it had been that, the movie would be HORRIBLE: predictable, cliched, etc;
Did anyone else think the movie was going to be something different to what it was?

I thought the movie was going to be a LOT more kiddish and slapstick than it was. And I thought there was going to be a scene where Hiccup hid Toothless in his house (I was close, he hid him in his workshop).

LOL, that part was funny, how from Astrid's POV Hiccup is just floating while there's a dragon on the other side... CX

I will freely admit this. I thought I would hate this movie.
The first time I saw the trailer, I was nerdraging because I adore the book this film was based on. XD This movie is nothing like the book. I know better now, of course. If anything, the movie is much, much better than the book.
I did know how Hiccup would be (he's essentially the same kid he was in the book. Just in different situations) I figured Astrid would be the talented kind of bitchy girl. I was sort of right there. I ... didn't know what to make of movie Toothless. XD I love what was done with him, though.
So all in all, my theories of this being a crappy movie were for naught and I was wrong.

I too thought I wouldn't like the movie, but that's mostly the fault of the awful TV spots playing in my area. Nothing but slapstick and LOL HUMOR! (Of course, I had seen the trailer prior, so I got mixed signals...and eventually chose to trust the trailer and Bane, who assured me it would be fine. And a friend of mine who got invited to a test screening. ) Anywhoo, I was under the impression that Toothless adored Hiccup from day one, and that he'd try to follow him home and hide in his house, so Hiccup would have to build another little hiding place for him. And that Astrid would find out, and he'd have to beg her to keep the secret (okay, that was KINDA CLOSE...) Something like "The Iron Giant" scenario going on, with the other Vikings knowing there was a dragon somewhere and looking for it. Also thought that Astrid and Ruffnut would be fighting over Hiccup.

Most of my theories on WHEN stuff would happen and HOW it did.
Like the free fall? 27 and I originally thought it was part of a big battle scene near the end. (well, we got... somethin like it)
I originally thought Hiccup chased after Toothless right after he set him free... wrong again, as usual.
I also thought that Toothless snuck into Hiccup's house. ... Eh, wrong again!

Like Bane, I thought that the freefall scene was toward the end during the big battle with that large dragon. I was also under the impression that the Red Death was attacking the village for whatever reason, but no. The Vikings went to it, it didn't come to them, heh.
The original teaser trailer made me think that the movie was going to be extremely cheesy. It struck me as a very cliched storyline that was going to be predictable and childlike (but it was not, obviously, and I was pleasantly surprised about that).

OH! I just remembered another theory I had! I thought that Hiccup would be sneaking into the arena at night to train the dragons, instead of training them while fighting them. And I also thought he would give Astrid the Nadder earlier on, as a romantic gesture. Come on, that would've been adorable!

Haha, I wish I'd had some theories. I pretty much just went into it blind.
Well, not completely blind. I was all "YEY DRAGONS TEEHEE." Because I'm just that mature.

First time I heard of it was I think last summer or fall when I went to the theaters and saw the stand-up thing advertising it. I thought it looked dumb (I'm ashamed to admit that...) and wasn't going to see it.
Right after it came out I saw some commercials, and then my sisters got toys from McDonalds and wanted to go see it, so I went with them and my dad. It's my favorite movie now!
I didn't know that there was a book either.
