So, do we have any fans here? I first watched this movie when I was younger, and my mother thought I might enjoy it. But considering I would have been around 10 at the time, the movie was too insane for me, and the only thing I could remember was Ewan MacGregor's character being thrown into the street. There was another thing I thought I remembered, but it turns out that was from an old perfume commercial.
Then I was able to see it again in my film class, and oh my god, that was amazing! From the way they did the 20th Century Fox logo, I was immediately sucked in. My favourite numbers are when the group first enters Moulin Rouge and there are about four songs playing at once, "Come What May", "The Show Must Go On" and "El Tango de Roxanne". The editing for everything is insane, and the film has one of the highest cut ratios of any film, with 5,000 cuts while most films average about 2-3,000.
Though I'm not sure how I felt about the romance between Christian and Satine. I thought it was all right, but I'm still with those people that think the whole movie was just in Christian's head. Like, he did fall in love with a courtesan who died of tuberculosis, and in his grief wrote a romanticised version of what happened. With the tonal shift the movie makes between comedy and drama, it seems a good theory to me.
I also liked the shout outs to other movies within it, like Singin' In the Rain (where Christian spins around with an umbrella and hopping up to a prop of the Eiffel Tower), A Trip to the Moon (the face on the moon), Citizen Kane (the upward shot of the theatre at the end), and though my teacher never brought it up, I'm certain the bird Satine has is an homage to The Blue Angel.
Anyway, I've rambled on long enough. What do you guys have to say about the movie?
