Basically for anyone who's seen the recent new movie, there should be a thread to discuss it's events. So here it is.

I've seen the movie twice so far thanks to some advance screenings.
An area they should have improved on is more Astrid and Valka interaction, I think it would have been interesting to see how they relate to each other.
The twin row of fins along Toothless' back I found weird, Valka claims they improve manuverablity, but it would actually have the reverse effect. Plus, it's wrong to introduce drastic visual changes to Toothless now.
Also, I find the idea of the Alpha being able to enthrall Toothless completely impossible. Toothless can't be controlled like other dragons, because the Red Death had this ability as well and Toothless was immune to it.
I'm uncertain about other dragons, but given that Stormfly and the other trained dragons were able to resist the Red Death implies that once a dragon learns to resist the control, they acquire immunity to it. So they also should have been unable to be enthralled if that was true.
Something I was wondering about, is Drago Bloodfist wearing a cloak of Night Fury skin? It's black and there's only one species of dragon with black skin! It might also explain why he can't be burned, Night Fury skin is fireproof and if he was wearing a cloak of it, it means it's fireproof too. We see Hookfang directly shoot a jet of flame at the cloak and Drago doesn't get burned.

I've seen the movie twice so far thanks to some advance screenings. Ah, I'm going to be seeing it for the second time today hopefully. An area they should have improved on is more Astrid and Valka interaction, I think it would have been interesting to see how they relate to each other.Well, I don't see why they would--I mean, if they were always split that would be the case, but Toothless can adjust their positions reflexively, so it's possible that's what they were going for. "Every nest has it's queen, but this is the king of all dragons!" I think that it's more likely that the reason they weren't still under the Queen's spell is simply because they had all been away from the nest for months. I don't think it had to specifically be Night Fury skins, all dragons have fireproof scales.

It was the color that caused me to think it was Night Fury skin.
Yes, other dragons have fireproof skin, but they all have brightly colored skins. This cloak was black.

Pros of HTTYD 2:-Improved visuals -Great characterization for Hiccup -Great new characters (Valka, Eret, Drago) -Stoick's death raises the stakes -Builds upon the original's creativity -Comedic dialogue with Astrid and Ruffnut -Toothless -Climatic and engaging story -Emotionally appealing to all age groups Cons of HTTYD 2-Desperate lack of pacing and structure (Everything seemed jumbled together and there was no interlude between key events) -Lack of proper introduction (Though it's understandable considering its a sequel) -Lack of Astrid -Drago's introduction was cool, but was ruined in it's sub-par presentation -The dialogue in the climatic Hiccup/Toothless scene was awful (Thinking about it, a lot of the dialogue in the movie seemed somewhat poor) In the end, I enjoyed HTTYD 2 a lot though, and I went to see it twice. As far as movie quality goes, in terms of story writing and pacing, however, I'd have to say I have no doubt it's inferior to it's predecessor, despite how strongly I prefer the tone of this new movie.

I actually disagree with a lot of your cons, I only felt that the pacing problems were minor for the most part and the rest of it was fine with me except for the lack of Astrid which I agree with. I see how it might not have worked for you, but I had a different experience and the film really worked on almost every level for me. Though so far I have only seen it once.

Yeah, for the most part they were minor nitpicks--Except for the first note. The pacing really bothered me when stepping back and looking at the movie as a whole. I think perhaps a bit more of pre-climax Berk scenes would have been very nice to smooth the movie.
I have to really emphasize the feels from everything with Stoick saving Hiccup and his pyre, definitely a strong point of the movie as Hiccup's finds his resolve.

The pacing bothered me a little bit, but I actually had the same experience with the first movie the first time. But then every other time I watched it I didn't care. I think I'll have to see this one at least once more in theaters to REALLY make a decision as to which I like better, but it didn't have the same affect on me as it did you. I do think that's something both movies have as a flaw; both could have been a little longer. I hope the third movie is significantly longer, or, actually, I think it would be beneficial to have two more movies, which I wrote a lot about why in here: shadethenightfury.tumblr.com/post/88823559372/httyd2-analysis-on-the-future-of-the-franchiseYes, yes yes yes, that was amazing. I also really liked the fluffy parts of it, like Hiccup bonding with his mother, the play-fight with Toothless at the begginning, the part when Cloudjumper was kneeling over baby Hiccup and gently playing with him basically.

Well, I'm interested to see how they're going to work with the third movie.
After seeing how the second has the recurring "parallel paths" with Hiccup becoming Chief and Toothless becoming the Alpha, reflecting how in the first they were both crippled, it's obviously going to be the same in the third movie. Ergo, at the end they're probably going to finish off with both of their love interests, as there is the obviously open Hiccstrid. This means there is probably going to be another Night Fury in the next film, which they've been teasing for ages, even I find that apparent despite previously being against the idea of another showing up. Not only is it to end on that note, but it's also supposed to explain why there are no longer any dragons around today, so I'm curious to see how they're going to end it on a happy and (supposedly) tragic note at the same time, and how they're going to be involved with one another.

I think a lot of the pacing 'issues' are due to it being a middle movie. It seems to happen with most trilogies, the middle can seem odd on its own, particularly so if unfamiliar to the first. It did feel strangely paced, and the usual beginning middle end arch seemed flat. I can't really pick when the action sets off and then resolves, it was all over the place. This is not necessarily a bad thing, I quite enjoyed it. But I can see how that could be jarring. I'd argue the first movie had similar traits however, it switched back and forth between the dragon fighting class and the bonding between Hiccup and Toothless, leading up to one final battle. The one scene I found to be bothersome was the transition between the funeral and the bickering of the young group. It seemed too light hearted considering I was in tears just a second ago. Although maybe this was intentional.
The movie continued to develop the characters, and over all I was pleased with the direction they are taking it. Has anyone else read the books by Cressida Cowell? It seems to be taking a similar path.
Like you guys, I'd love to see more Astrid too. I think they make a good pair, and she seems to provide a perfect balance to help Hiccup with the chiefly duties. Without her I think Hiccup would have a lot of trouble haha.. I hope we don't get the whole Toothless love interest trope in the third installment, unless they write it incredibly well it will just seem cheesy. But who knows, thee of little faith.. lmao
As for Toothless, the Red Death seemed to use more persuasion and fear to control the smaller dragons, whereas this one was more full on mind control. Disabling consciousness thus relying on instinctive traits maybe? Drago seems like he would rather utilise a Night Fury than kill it for a cloak, but he might've done so before he had his intentions fully worked out. At the least, it's some kind of dragons skin. Pretty effective.
