A young female night fury, perhaps just older then a child in human equivalent, was out to have an adventure. Life was too boring in her clan, and she was quickly learning to see past the expectations her family had set for her. For ever since the young female could remember, her mother had told her she would do great things. Her childhood was filled with fantasies of her future; of how a beautiful dragon like herself would surely find love.. And would have beautiful hatchlings, and how life would be so great and wonderful. Yet, to this young night furies annoyance, most of the males in her clan were not the dream boats her mother had portrayed her future love to be. Life was so much different from the stories of old, and she was quickly finding out that being beautiful came with a cost. Yet all worries aside, she had taken time in the middle of the night to sneak out of her clans territory. Why? Well lets see, the clan was located in a big cove, with a bunch of night furies battling it out for every possible reason.. Whether it be for a female, or simply for a scrap of meat.. Fighting seemed to be everything in the night fury world. Something she didn't think too highly of.
And so, she had gotten away from her clan mates, to see the world beyond her small cove. The young night fury female prowled through the forest, looking around at the world with curiosity. It was her first time out of the clans territory, and she had to admit; it was pretty cool. Smaller creatures that she had never noticed danced on tiny wings above her. A soft rumble of greeting erupted from her throat, which made them scatter and fly off in every direction. Odd.. Why are they scared of me? She wondered softly to herself, before looking around at the other critters.. Most of which she had never noticed before. A small creature with odd legs, that hopped rather then run, came out into a small clearing. Teeth retracted, she gave a gummy smile.. Yet teeth or not, the young creature took one look at her and lit out for its tunnels underground. Smile quickly fading, she looked down sadly. The world certainly isn't what I expected.. She thought to herself, looking at the hole where the rabbit had disappeared. I certainly didn't think all these creatures would fear me. But.. why do they fear me? Can't they see I'm friendly?
It was only then that a scent came to her nostrils, and she wondered if she wasn't quite alone. Ear flaps laid back, a small snarl forming on her jaws as her teeth snapped out of her gums. Instinct took over as her back hunched, wings lifted.. She had never flown before, but the instinct of fight or flight still weighed heavily in her DNA. Looking around slowly, she inhaled to see if she could catch the scent of whoever was out there. Sending a telepathic message, she warned to any night furies close enough to receive her message, If its a fight you're looking for, I'm not interested. Show yourself before I change my mind. Her eyes were slits, untrusting of her surroundings. She didn't know why this sudden urge to fight whatever or whoever had followed her had come into her mind.. Perhaps it was just in her DNA. Whatever the reason, she stood warily, though her legs were shaking.. She didn't want a fight, but instinct drove her to glare out, waiting to see who or what had followed her, for what else could be the reason that they were here?

His eyes were wide eyed, staring into the stream. The chorus of songbirds echoed in the tree line ahead, the constant rustle of the stream had his attention. His eyes narrowed into nothing larger than a slit, his ears pulled back as far as they could go. Dagger like teeth burst through his gums. The shimmer of a fish flashed passed his eyes. His head dove into the water faster than a rabbit leaping into his home, and re-emerged as fast as it had disappeared below the tumbling water. The tail of the fish was in his mouth, but only for a moment. Gulp. Wide eyed, ears up, teeth retracted, a grin like expression emerged. That was almost too easy. The young night fury sat back on his haunches and took in what was going on around him. The forest was alive with activity big and small. Birds of prey hovered above him looking for their next meal. A small mouse was scuttling across the grass ahead of him, beyond the stream, and he saw one of these birds take the chance and dive for it. The bird was gaining on that mouse fast; if it didn’t reach its hole it was dead. He could hear the scuttle of its paws. Silence. The bird didn’t have anything it its talons.
Noise! He saw a rabbit move past at an alarming rate. He rolled off his haunches. It seemed to shriek and shout as if it was spooked by something. Or someone. Once again his eyes narrowed, ears backed down and teeth extended, waiting for the aggressor to emerge. Then kill it. If it’s a fight you’re looking for I'm not interested. Show yourself before I change my mind. His instinct took over and with movement that surpassed the fastest of any creature in the forest, he was up in the trees above. Light wasn’t easy to come by in the forest, and he knew this. He’d lived in it all his life with his clan so he knew exactly where it would be impossible to see his silhouette. Even from another night fury. He couldn’t smell it; the wind was blowing downstream away from him. He had to move to a better position. He waited. The wind changed and was now blowing towards him. He launched himself up high and away into the forest canopy while making no more noise than the wind. His wings were much more defined for a night fury his age, and were of a larger wingspan so flying was already second instinct to him. This made flying a lot easier. And near silent. He landed noiselessly on a firm branch a good distance behind where he was before.
Once again he paid attention to the wind’s direction. The force of the wind was pushing into him. He took a deep breath to capture the scent of the other night fury. The scent was fairly strong. He wanted to get lower, but he knew he couldn’t. He stared down into the forest. It was dark, as the forest canopy blocked out a lot of the light. He kept looking, hoping, willing himself to spot that other night fury. The forest seemed to be in complete silence. There it was. Even from that height, he could easily the silhouette of the other night fury. It was a she. He took in her body language to ascertain whether she was a threat. Ears back…narrow eyes…hunched back…wings lifted…but. Something seemed off. She looked frightened, not angry and vicious. Obviously she hasn’t had much experience outside of her clan. He noticed something else. She seemed elegant. Almost beautiful. Something about her made her stand out to him. His clan never did have female night fury’s like that. He had a choice; play it safe and strike, or take a risk. His head said to play it safe. He always had followed it. But his heart was telling him something else…

The night stood still, among the trees and darkened sky lay stars somewhere scattered overhead. Their dim light shone down into the canopy floor, and what little rays of the moons eerie glow were strong enough lit the darkened canopy below. As she stood, the darkness seemingly once her friend, her legs shook with fright. She had never encountered another dragon outside her clan. Sure, she had seen them flying over head, had seen visitors to talk to the top night furies about wars and allies and such.. But never had she gone out of the safety of those borders and happened upon a dragon; and never, ever, one that she had no clue whether it it was a friend.. or foe... And that very thought shook her courage, rattled her bones to shake beneath her once sure footed step. The wind blew in her direction, allowing a scent to come into her nostrils. Being young, she could not read it properly. She only knew that it was a dragon of some kind, for the scent reminded her of her own clans many scents. Yet it was one she had never taken in before, one that had never met her slit like nostrils. And with the many scents around her, she doubted if she was right. Was it really a dragon? And if it was a dragon, how could she be sure what kind? In her heart she knew the answer; the solemn fact that she honestly had no idea about this being that approached.
As a wind gusted overhead, she cowered a little, her gaze lifting to the skies. Squinting past the canopy, she tried to get a visual.. tried with all her might to detect if there was a dragon circling overhead.. But alas, she couldn't see a thing... not a single bloody thing. Frustrated with the silence, she looked around herself as the wind changed direction and the scent drifted back towards her. Something was definitely out there, for the beasts scent betrayed its hiding, and let it known that it was out there. Yet what or who was still unknown, and she couldn't even detect if it was a male or female... Not yet anyway. As she looked around, she had an eerie feeling, a feeling that this might not end well. What if this dragon was hunting her? Had it really been wise to leave the safety of her clan?
Now, upon her mind reeling.. She found her once smart and well trained mind playing tricks on her. Tricks that she almost believed; for it told her that this was not a good idea, that she should run, or fight back.. That she should threaten whoever was out there, or perhaps just roar for help; and in the fury of her mind reeling a blue glow lit her throat, and before she could control it a shot of plasma flew out of the clearing. It was her first time firing a plasma blast, and she found her mouth burning hot afterwards. It felt like her tongue and gums had been lit on fire, yet it didn't bother her as much as it should. Yet the light the blast shot was enough to light up some of the area, showing birds flying out from where she had shot and... and a few fell to the earth, having been hit by her blast. Horrified of herself, she realized why those creatures feared her. For if she chose to, she could be a beast, a killer.. But.. what if the one who was watching her was just that.. a killer? Mind reeling she looked around, a single telepathic message being sent. Sorry, I didn't mean to fire... If you're out there, please.. Come where I can see you.

The wind was whirling and twirling around him up in the trees. He was still weighing the choices of either head or heart. Birds danced around him nearby as he was perched on the branch. As far as he could remember, he always followed what his head said, no matter what. What made this so…different? Why was he struggling to do what he’d done all his life? He took another breath of the crisp, evening air to try and clear his thoughts and peered down below to the ground below. He knew that the wind was blowing towards her, giving away the direction in which he was hiding in. There wasn't much light, and he was struggling to see her. At least that meant it would be even harder for her to see him. Hopefully. He found himself unnerved by the realization that she may be able to see him and all she had to do was look up at the right spot. He noticed something about her body language. She had quickly begun to too look very anxious about something. Had she seen him? Was the game up?
A completely new sound erupted below. The sort of sound he heard when a clan mate fired a plasma bolt. The wind rustled the trees around him. Birds were screaming; the ground far below him was alive with activity; the creatures didn't know what to do and were panicking. He saw the smoking remains of what were once a few birds. Tasty he thought to himself. His stomach gave a low growl in agreement; the kind of growl a predator would make before going for the kill. Those freshly burnt birds were actually quite appetizing. He would love to eat one of those; that fish he had earlier wasn't enough for him. He looked back at her. Why she looked so shocked at her plasma bolt. Like she hadn't ever fired one before? Before she had fired, he thought (Before he’d been interrupted) she was shaken by recent events. Now, he felt responsible for scaring her like this.
Enough is enough. Like he had done all his life when hunting prey, he waited for the wind to blow into him to keep his scent away from whatever he was hunting. The wind changed direction and he made his move. He opened his wings so the wind would give him the lift needed for flight. The wind obliged, and rose slowly off the branch, before he swooped away. There was no point in scaring her any further, it made no sense. His head had won again. Sorry, I didn't mean to fire... If you're out there, please. Come where I can see you. He landed to mull this over. Was this a ploy of some kind? Surely if she was that afraid that would be the last thing on her mind? Unless…she was genuine? He could only see the darkness of the forest ahead of him as he hastily thought this over. Dare he let his heart win? Once more, his head was calling for him to move away and leave her to it. This time…for the first time…it didn't win.
Because he had only travelled a very small distance, he could quickly manoeuvre himself into a position where he could make contact in a place where he could be seen by her. His head cried for him to get out. It was ignored once more. He had a flurry of thought go through his head. He knew this was a big risk. He knew that if he had judged her wrong, he’d be dead. Beyond the few bushes ahead of him, he could see her ahead. This was it. No going back. He closed his eyes and took a breath as deep as he could muster. Right. OK. His feet nearly gave way under the pressure he found himself in. In a way, he hoped the ground would swallow him whole before he reached her. He was not one for staying on the ground more than he needed to. He began to move his feet again. He knew he looked quite nervous, but he wasn't able to not show it. Tentatively, he moved forward into a space where she could see him…

Peering out into the darkness, her fear still weighed heavily in her mind. Yet something else started to form in her heart as she stared into the dark canopies; curiosity… For why hadn’t this beast, whoever or whatever it was, made itself known yet? If she was being hunted wouldn’t she hear a growl, or worse… be dead already? Surely if there was a threat something would have happened by now. So, as she stood there, peering out into the darkness, she wondered what could be out there… Who.. could be out there.. And why couldn’t she see them? Why were they so well hidden in the dark? And then… it hit her; the sudden realization that this was a dragon. And not just any dragon.. It was one like her. It all made sense now, for any other creature- even a dragon- would be easier to spot in the night. But ones like her, with blackened scales and stealth, were easy to miss in the cloak of darkness.
Still the worry made her question why he was here, but curiosity got the better of her as she sent out her request for him to come where she could see him. A few moments of silence and then… a soft rustling noise met her ears. She lifted her head, peering around, but she could see nothing in the dark. After a few moments, another soft noise met her ears, and this time she guided her gaze to where it had come from… And then she saw.. him. The one who had made her doubt herself, had put fear in her heart, and yet.. as she looked at him, she saw something that made her heart thunder in her chest. For he was not just a night fury, but a male, she realized, and one with an impressive wingspan.. Her eyes mulled over his features, his stronger, more masculine features.
Hesitating only a moment, she stepped towards him.. As she came towards him she retracted her teeth, hoping that by doing so he would realize she meant no harm to him. It was a risky move, for if he so chose he could bite into her flesh and it would take her longer to get her defenses up.. Her head told her to turn back, to run.. Yet her heart screamed for her to be closer to him, to feel his touch against her. She had no idea why she was suddenly feeling all this, all she knew was that as she closed the distance her heart thundered with an urge to be closer to him. Finally she was close enough to where her maw could nearly touch his. She moved her nose to his neck, breathing in his musk like scent. Selene. She said telepathically to him. I am… Selene. She pulled back the desire to be closer to him still thundering through her veins. And so, after hesitating only a moment, she let her maw draw closer to his skin, touching against his neck so lightly her skin barely met his.. Before pulling back, her voice whispered in her telepathic message.. Sorry.. I.. I don’t know what came over me.. She looked down, yet the desire to be closer to him still sparked through every vein in her body.

He still felt nervous about being on the ground. It made him feel vulnerable. He used every bit of willpower he could muster in that moment to keep his teeth retracted and avoid looking like a threat to her. He suddenly felt another request for him to show himself. This was it. His legs may well have been lead when he was almost shuffling forward. He saw she was looking at him. He took this opportunity to look at her in a new light; one that was at her, not above her. She looked absolutely stunning. There was not another word he could find in that moment to describe her. He knew that he was the older one of the two, as she had lesser developed wings and generally a smaller physique, but only by maybe a year or two at most. He could tell though that she really would be something any dragon would want to be with. This is what he had thought earlier, when he had been watching her movement. He had to take another breath of the air to keep his cool. He had only seen maybe 2-3 dragons out of his clan before now. They were far, far away. She wasn't.
He saw her approaching. Her movement was hesitant, like she still had some reservations about him. About what he had just put her through maybe? She still had her teeth out. Had he made the wrong move? Was she not the dragon he had imagined? Just as this flashed by in his mind, they were gone; back in her gums. A huge relief swept across his body… wait. She had this look about her, but couldn’t nail it down. It wasn’t one that was aggressive or menacing. He wasn't sure. He found that only a moment later she was no more than half a wing from him. He stayed still. Time seemed to stop for him as she drew closer. He felt something against his skin. A breath. He couldn’t believe it. It was…hers. She didn't try to bite him. A feeling no other covered his body and soul. Selene. This was all he picked up. He was almost in a trance. He felt his eyes widened and his mouth drop a little. This had gone better than he had dared to hope.
By the time his senses had recovered, he found Selene had backed away a little. Maybe she picked up that he was absolutely dumbfounded? Sorry…I…I don’t know what came over me… His mind was reeling for a reply. Blank. She was looking down, avoiding eye contact. He knew that he was better developed than most at his age, particularly his wings. Maybe this ...drew her to him? He didn't dwell on this, because the silence gave him a few seconds of time to think of a reply that would ease the tension. As if what she did wasn’t an ice breaker already. He managed to make what was (probably) a smile. Is that how you greet every dragon you come across? Hopefully she knew he was only teasing. I’m Colt. He heard a nearby stream. He gestured with his head towards it. Thirsty? Hopefully she would say yes. At least this would show he wanted to be friends with her, rather than someone to fear...

Approaching him had to be one of the most daring feats she had accomplished in a long, long time. It was an adrenaline rush just to see him, and when she approached and found herself drawn to him… She found herself wishing the moment would last forever. He stood still, and as she pulled back she caught a glimpse of his eyes... They were wide, with an expression in them she had never seen before. Little did she know a similar look was reflecting in her eyes... In her own was one of desire, of a longing for something more. Yet as she heard his voice echo in her mind, his strong, masculine voice. She found herself looking up. His tones in her mind sounded mischievous and playful. As she drew her gaze up towards his eyes she noticed his gummy grin. A bashful smile came to her maw, though it was more of a dragon smile then a human one. Ear flaps laid back at his teasing compliment, averting her gaze. Too shy to dare lift her gaze to him, she found herself picturing him in her mind, a day dream forming. Lost in thought a moment, his mind synch came to her as he introduced himself. Colt.. She repeated in the link, and smiled a little bit. Nice meeting you. Came her return of a telepathic message. It was only when he mentioned a stream and nodded towards it that she formed a mischievous grin on her maw.
Bounding forward suddenly, she used all her strength to propel herself forward on foot. Race ya! She yelled softly back in his mind, and as she continued bounding forward she felt the sudden urge to spread her wings. Never before when bounding about had she had this urge, so she spread her wings outward, giving them a powerful stretch... Hardly a moment later, she felt her claws lift off the ground... Surprised at herself, she let out a soft scream of surprise. It soon turned to joy as she found herself propelled into the air. However, moments later she was plummeting towards the ground again... She fell towards the earth, her screams forming.. Before instinct took over and the overwhelming urge to move her wings coursed through her veins. She stretched them again, moving them like she had seen her parents do. Within moments she had leveled... She found herself grinning. From where she was she could see the stream, but she had lost sight of Colt.
Colt? She questioned the air, flapping her wings hard to stay up in the air. Yet she was too far away to hear any mind synch that he might give her, and a sudden fear that he was too far away to hear her calls hit her. Knowing she had to go back, she looked down to the ground below... Everything looked so different from up here… Desperately her eyes searched for the spot she had taken off from... She spotted several small clearings.. She could only take a guess at which one she had just been in. Struggling to stay in flight, she began to fear landing... Colt! She called again. Again her mind synch blocked out any messages, for she was too far away from the ground to hear any. She had never known mind synchs had a limit as to who could hear them. She’d have to worry about that later, for as she flapped her wings, searching for Colts figure below, her strength gave out... For her underdeveloped wings could not possibly keep her in the air any longer... Plummeting downwards, she flapped her wings desperately to try and regain her balance… Flipping mid-air, her screams escaped her lungs as she hit a tree, falling through the branches and onto the cold earth below. Before she could realize what was happening, everything went black…
When she woke, she heard a low growl. Colt... She whispered in her mind synch, blinking her eyes open. Her vision was shaky. But the figure before her was not Colt, nor even a night fury. The figure before her was a monsterous nightmare, a rogue who had heard the commotion and come for an easy meal. Jolting to alertness, she struggled to get up and run away, yet found her paw was stuck at an odd angle underneath her. Her vision blurred as she struggled to stand despite the pain, collapsing once more. Barely awake, she called through her mind synch weakly..
Colt…

A moment of absolute elation had turned into something nightmares are made from. He was above her in a bid to win the race before she fell away from him, losing sight of her as she approached the ground below. He knew Selene's wings weren't developed enough to fly, but why he didn't say for her not to was beyond him. He let his heart say that she could, while his head had said for him to stop her before she went too high. I was a fool. A sudden pang of guilt was in the foremost of his mind. He did this. He wasn't responsible for her flying, but he was responsible for the events leading up to it. He wouldn't be able to live himself if she hurt herself because he didn't do what his head said to do. His soul became twisted with worry and guilt. And a tinge of selfishness penetrated it for the first time, forever tainting it; he wanted her safe for his desires.
His eyes were narrow, ears peeled back. He could hear something that resembled Selene's voice. ..olt. Damn. Too far away to know where it came from. Frustration played on his mind. Was that her dying call? Was that the last time he'd ever see her again? No, it couldn't be. Could it? He managed to strengthen his resolve to something stronger then the hardest rocks in the World. No. I will find her. Safe. Unharmed. His wings were developed enough to allow for a good period of gliding time for something that rivalled much older night furys, so that's what he did. With a focus that could only come into existence in times of emergency, he was suddenly able to pick up the faintest of sounds and catch the smallest rays of light. He flew low, his stomach barely clearing the top of the forest canopy in a bid to fin anything that could give him a clue to her whereabouts. In his initial panic, he didn't take in where she fell. He saw a few openings ahead of him. Maybe one of them held her? He hoped. His wings were tiring, so he would have to rest at the nearest one anyway for a few minutes. Whether he liked it or not.
He dived in at a speed rivalled only by the wind, willing her to be here. He glided around the small lake in the centre of the clearing. Surely not in the lake? His head told him no. He listened to it. His wings were only spread out by now due to sheer willpower. He had to land. To regain feeling in them and go again when they allowed him to. He slowed himself over some flat terrain; a dry mud bowl. The debris in the mud bowl was kicked in the air and twirled as he landed. He caught his breath. No scent. The wind was blowing away from him. He whipped round in an effort to find a scent. Any scent. Still nothi- wait. Something moved in the tree line. He knew he wouldn't be able to stay in the shadows to suss out whether it was a threat; he couldn't afford to waste time. He needed to find her. Fast. He sprang into the bushes just behind where he saw whatever had moved. Was it her? Was it another dragon? Or worse? He silenced these thoughts and re-focused himself. He kept his eyes lids as tight as possible to keep conceal his eyes golden glow at bay. Oh. Only a deer. He burst out the thick foliage and continued his search.
His wings felt good enough to fly again. Not for too long, but long enough. He sprinted back to the mud bowl and unfurled his wings. The speed he ran at meant the wind picked him up absolutely no time. He normally relished in such a start to flight, but not this time. He couldn't think of anything else by now. His mind just kept looping: Selene, Selene, Selene, Selene. He took a breath t- Hold on. He took another breath. That smelt like her. Could it be? Was his mind playing tricks on him, just as it did with Selene? One more... YES! It was a very, very faint smell, but his mind had memorised the scent long before now. He had already felt his wings tire, but they...well, they just felt like they could go on all year now. Must be adrenaline. Let's use it while it lasts. He began to home in on her scent, and every second it became stronger. Another scent. A foreign one. A dangerous one. Selene was in grave danger. He knew by now that she would be able to call out to him judging by the scent. Selene! Where are you!? ...Why wasn't she calling back?
He zipped over another clearing. Her scent was so, so near. Where was she? Why wasn't she calling out? That focus he had earlier was still him. Strange. A strong light was coming from the ground. He'd never seen anything like this before. The only time he'd seen something like this was the fire at his clan's home. His old home. His old friends. His old family. Wait, what was that? And is that... Colt... Selene had just fell on the ground was lying her side, facing away from him. This..this... thing, much larger than he was just on fire. All of it. He'd never seen anything like this. Ever. Not in his wildest dreams. And nightmares. He saw its face watch her and change expression. The same expression he would have when going for the kill. He hadn't even begun to think about that when his mouth began to sear with a heat completely unreal. He'd only done this twice before. Once for fun. Once for his life. And now, for hers. The heat and pain grew. The fire ejected from his mouth. It hit the creature in his midriff, and it reeled in agonising pain. It hadn't expected company. It wouldn't have done. It rolled around on its back, with its fire extinguished and was drawing breaths at a fast rate. Had he killed it? It stopped rolling. It took a sigh, and stopped drawing breaths.
He saw Selene lying on the ground. He sprinted as fast as he could towards her, faster than the wind to where she could see him. And he could see her. He was full of something he hadn't felt in a long time. Fear. Fear she was hurt. Or worse. Selene! he cried. He raced round her head to where it was moments before. He looked at her. He had never been so relieved to see another dragon breathing. He looked at her body, to see if she was hurt. Her head and body was OK barring a few scratches on her body from where she fell...no, she seemed OK. He looked at her, and tried to smile as he did earlier. He saw her paw. It looked...crooked? It didn't seem like it was broken, but it did look sore and sprained. He felt some of the guilt fall away. She was alive, but she was still hurt. Because of him. His looked away in shame...

Where was Colt? Where was he? She thought she heard his mind synch calling for her, but she had heard it when she was first waking up and still too weak to respond. As the scene played out, she called for him. Where was he? Why wasn't he here? He would come for her, he had to. That heated moment couldn't have been for nothing. They had a bond forming, that couldn't end now, it just couldn't. So, as she lay there, she her heart lurch with hope that he would come. However as the beast stepped forward, her hope faded. There was no other sign of another dragon, just her and the beast. She knew that if she was going to die she wanted to at least know what had happened in her final moments, and remember the feeling of flight. So, she forced herself to think.... To remember something, anything.. about how she had crashed.
Her mind raced a mile a minute, trying to recall what had happened during her flight to cause her to crash. Nothing. All she could remember was taking off into the air, and of course Colt, and then... blackness... Struggling to get up upon seeing the deadly dragon, she watched as the dragon moved towards her. It seemed she was doomed as the beast lit himself on fire, threatening her with his sheer size and jaw strength. He snarled at her, clearly unafraid to kill her. Her eyes looked at the beast, who seemed to have no mercy reflecting in his own dark eyes. This as it, she thought she saw a flame building in his throat, and she looked down, averting her gaze. As she did so, a blue glow lit her paws, and she looked down at them, jaw agape.
Closing her eyes, she heard the plasma blast and opened them to see the beast stumbling and falling. The beast was dead... She felt pain for his death, but at the same time an odd relief.. She knew that it had to be either that dragon or her who had died.. But.. Who had killed hi- Colt! She had turned her head just in time to see Colt racing towards her. She struggled onto her good paws, and her eyes searched his as he approached, looking her over. Then he looked away. She gathered as much strength as possible to move towards him, wrapping her wing around him. You.. You saved my life... Thank you.. She said softly through her link, then she reached up, nuzzling against him gently. Stay with me. She asked softly, looking to him with soft eyes. She moved her head to lay against his chest. Nuzzling against him, she said softly in her mind synch Stay with me... Just stay with me.. just like this...

He felt ashamed he couldn't protect from hurting herself. Here he was, a hero... he liked the sound of that, a hero. But, that feeling of guilt, shame...selfishness would never be washed away. He should have done more. Something touched his neck. His wide golden eyes looked down. Her nuzzle. It felt comforting after what had just happened. It would probably comfort anyone if they went through what he had just been in. It made the heart ache, the emotional torment worth it all. Nothing could change that. You.. You saved my life... Thank you... Those words sunk into his heart. He almost had to sit on his haunches as he was taken aback by that the feelings that coursed through him. Pride. He hadn't felt pride for a long time. Not since..well...
Stay with me. Her sweet voice came through. It took his mind back to the present. He only just realised her wing had been wrapped around his back. How long had her wing been there for? Probably a while now. He felt her limp slightly around to his chest. Even that made him feel a little shameful. She put her head against it. His heart pounded with emotions unfelt. It felt good. Stay with me... Just stay with me.. just like this... He happily obliged. He lowered his head to rest on hers. Not much, only enough for her to know he was there. He relished this moment; it would be something he would never forget... He felt something in him change once more. He had something of a revelation in his outlook on life. Like he had come to terms with something he just couldn't before now. He had this feeling of hope. That everything would be just...fine. That she was the one for him. Everything in the forest around him just lit up a little.
He was still resting his head on top of hers. They must have been there for at least 2 minutes, just appreciating each others presence. He still felt responsible/guilty for Selene getting hurt. Nothing could change that. But, this revelation let him do something achieve something he couldn't before. He accept that would had happened, had happened, but that he also did good. He saved her. That was reason in itself to celebrate life. Her. Regardless of this though, he still felt like he owed her something. But...what? It came to him. He raised his head off hers. His face was one of remorse. Selene, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for making you fear me earlier. Sorry for not stopping you hurt yourself. He gestured towards her injured paw as he said this. It was almost night by now, and was getting cold...

An injured young night fury female struggled to find her footing. She looked around herself. Colt. She called softly, hoping he would answer. She had fallen asleep, and yet she hoped that now she would be able to walk. Flying would not be of any use to her, for she had little experience flying and the last time she had tried she had crashed.. thus injuring her paw. She managed to get up, one paw held up off the ground. Inhaling sharply, she caught a new scent and growled beneath her breathe. Hidden in the cover of bushes and trees, she peeked out, her eyes slits.. They were a good distance off, for her dragon vision allowed her to see better then even an eagle. Her cat like vision also allowed her to see in the dark, like night goggles were built into her DNA. And what she saw made her back hunch, her head lower in an aggressive position..
For just ahead, there were odd creatures.. Very, very, odd two legged figures were in the distance, speaking in odd tongues and one with.. One of her kind? And it seemed.. friendly with her.. It confused her to no end, and a low growl came from her as she turned, limping away. Before she could get far a sinister growl met her ears.. She looked over, at the body of the monsterous nightmare.. No, it was dead but how could that be-
The figure of a second monsterous nightmare, fully alive, and jumping from behind the dead one.. who had been her mate.. showed herself, growling at her. It's intentions were clear, to get revenge; and glowing feircly in its eyes was a desire to kill her.. She came into the scene, at least three times the young night furies size, growling her anger at her. It was obvious she blamed this young night fury for her mates death. Selene, the young night fury, shivered as she sent out a telepathic message for her one friend in the world. Colt.. She called.. Looking around for him, she wasn't sure where he was.. Trying to limp away it was no use, as the monsterous nightmares jaws became a glowing ember, ready to strike her with its fiery blast. One final telepathic plea screamed from her mind, as she closed her eyes shut tight. Colt!!!!

He'd moved up into the trees. He'd made the choice of hanging up there while Selene slept, as her guardian angel while she slept as a sentry would while on duty. Just in case. This was exactly like how he'd met her just a matter of hours earlier. Hiding up in the tree line staying out of site while she'd moved towards where he had been hunting fish. She was tentative. Nervous. Unsure of her surroundings. She knew that he had been somewhere above her, but she wouldn't have known where. This lead to her firing what turned out to be her first ever plasma bolt. He'd spooked her, and felt awful. Worse than awful. Guilty. He had decided to turn away, when his heart said something else. And he listened to it. So, he had moved back to she was at ground level, and let himself be seen. It was the hardest thing he had ever done. But it paid off, and they found themselves...attracted to each other. She challenged him to a race to the nearby stream, but she'd taken off. She was too young to fly, and she fell. He still wasn't sure how long he had spent searching for her. Eventually, after much heartache and fear, he found her. A Monstrous Nightmare was about to kill her. He was forced to kill it. She was alright, barring a few scratches. And a sprained paw. That's why she was sleeping now; so that she at least walk again without too much discomfort when she woke. And why he was guarding her.
He zoned in again, letting his senses take in what was around him once more, bringing himself back to the present. As young hunter in his old clan, he had honed his senses so that they were superior to most, if not all creatures in the forest. His wings were very well developed and was generally in peak condition for his age. He knew he'd be stronger, faster, swifter than nearly any other night fury when he was older. Even now he was able to glide for as long as most fully grown night fury's; something which made him desirable. It was like he was designed to be the apex of all night fury's. It was dark. Very dark. He could sense that the warmth of the Sun had dissipated into nothing and instead the glow of the moon was all that was lighting up the forest. Pale white stripes of light burst through the canopy of the forest where it was permitted to. His ears twitched. A stream was running very close by, and he could see it, behind the silhouette of the rocks behind him. The light from the moon reflected off the surface of the ever changing water. It was actually a very striking view. His stomach growled for something to eat; it had been a long day.
He heard something shake the ground below. It couldn't have been caused by something small. Whatever it was probably a fair distance away. Each step drew a stronger response from the ground below. It was getting closer. He could smell it. Selene! Wake up! Move! The wind blew towards him, betraying the whereabouts of this thing. It was coming at an angle to him. It smelt familiar. Like he'd met this thing before. It was getting closer, but his mind reeled for an answer to this smell. It found the answer. It was another Monstrous Nightmare, similar to the one he had to kill. To save her. He took another breath. This one smelt very, very close to the one he killed. Like it was the mate of the one coming towards her. He couldn't move and physically nudge Selene; it was too risky. Selene, move! Please! He could see the Monstrous Nightmare charging towards where Selene was. It looked for revenge. An eye for an eye. A life for a life.
He knew he had to kill it, as much as it pained him. Her life depended on it. He felt the heat of a plasma begin to head up his throat, but it didn't feel right. There was the heat, but nothing else seemed to happen. He couldn't muster that something to fire. Had he fired all the shots he was able to? She began to stir from her sleep now, a look of confusion was etched on her face as she wondered why this beast was headed towards her. She hadn't realised that this was the mate of the Monstrous Nightmare he killed. And she was about to take all the blame for it. He couldn't live with that. He wouldn't be able to live with that. By now she realised what was happening and why it was enraged at seeing her. He wasn't able to take the shot, but he had to do something. Anything. The dragon's mouth was open, and began to glow. Her paw meant she wouldn't be able to move out the way. He knew what he had to do, even if cost him his life. He sprung forward, spreading his wings as wide as they would go. Colt!!!! burst in his mind. He knew he had made the right choice, and he hardened his resolve. Possibly for the last time. It's mouth was as bright as the Sun as he swooped in front of her.
Something punched into his side. It burned. Burned like nothing he had ever experienced before. It forced his body to almost turn into itself as the shot pushed him off course. He seemed to hang for a second or so in the air before finally crashing into the ground. He was only conscious of the pain on his side. Rolling over many times, he felt stones, sticks and other small debris punch into his vulnerable skin before finally coming to a stop. Silence. Was he dead? Was she safe? These thoughts forced his eyes open. He needed to know. He couldn't move; the pain was too great for him to do anything more. His body felt like it was on fire. That every movement only fuelled the flames on it. His head was facing towards where the Monstrous Nightmare had taken its shot. Struggling to see, he wasn't able to tell what it was thinking. And it...flew off. Like it was satisfied it had done what it set out to do. He couldn't see Selene. He struggled to keep his golden eyes open. Was he her guardian angel? Did he save her...?

It was all a blur, really. One minute she had been laying there, helpless and the next her life seemed to crumble around her… For in those few split seconds she heard Colt’s desperate plea with her in her link, happened to look up and see his horrified expression as his blue glow rose in his throat.. The moments that passed next seemed to go by in slow motion, as he dove between her and the blast of the dragon firing at her. Nooo! She screamed in her mind link, a wild roar escaping her as she forced her wings to lift her.. Her body wrapped around him instinctively… He fell and she fell as well, rolling a few feet away on impact. Despite her pain, it seemed in that moment it was either gone or it didn’t matter, for as she rose a fury started in her heart as she saw Colt tumbling only to lay still. Her body had new adrenaline in it as her wings lifted her off the ground, high enough to aim as a blue glow loomed in her throat, her eyes fiery slits as she aimed and fired a blast, then another, and another.. Until six blasts were fired and she could fire no more, still growling furiously.. Energy drained, she landed in a heap next to Colt, her energy drained. The shots were enough to injure the nightmare, but far from kill it..
Her hope suddenly faded.. This was it; she was going to die, alongside Colt.. Her eyes closed, preparing for it.. But it never came. Instead a blue glow lit the area and made her open her eyes. Before her was a much older, more agile and more aggressive beast. Her mother, who was a well adapted fighter. With one huge blast the beast stumbled, then roared once before flying off. Briefly, Selene wondered why her mother hadn’t killed it. But shortly there after all went dark.. And when she woke.. She was back home.. But where was.. Colt.. She called in her mind link.. The other night furies looked at her, some seemed angry, but most seemed worried. Her paw feeling good enough to walk on, she rose quickly. Colt! She half screamed through her mind link, and as she looked around she pleaded.. Where is he? Silence answered her as she bolted around through out the cove, searching for him.
----
It was a calm night, but something was wrong. A couple nights earlier one of the night fury youths had gone missing. One particular female wasn’t taking it well, and set out looking for her. What she found, was a male instead. She watched him, from where she loomed in the skies, hidden in the clouds. And when he landed, she followed, for she had caught something on him; her daughters scent. It was undeniable; he had been with her. But where was she? Having lost track of him, she found his scent again and saw him landed in a tree. It didn’t take long before she spotted her daughter, sleeping nearby. She paused, examining him a moment.. It almost seemed like.. he was protecting her? Stifling a growl, she wondered if she was being held against her will. But when she woke her desperate calls for him filled her link. Her expression changed, and as she watched a monsterous nightmare came out from the shadows, looming over a dead dragon.
She could sense the fear in the male, could sense his ill feelings… Perhaps he was responsible for this in some way? A low growl emitted from her, and she was about to fire a blast at the beast when the fool flew between her daughter and the blasts. Growling under her breathe, she flew in, watching with a predator like smile as her daughter fired blast after blast at the beast. She flew by, firing one single blast, powerful enough to leave that beast staggering for a while. But she wouldn’t kill it. No, it had lost enough. As she had learned, killing should only happen in life or death situations, for otherwise it just caused trouble. And sometimes still caused trouble for later situations, like this scenario she had just stumbled upon. Glancing at her daughter, who seemed unconscious, and the male, who seemed just as injured, she gave a silent call, a roar that emitted through the trees. She had been smarter then most, and had brought some friends along with the search party. They flew over and managed to bring the two back to the safety of their territory. However once they were there the controversy began.. Some said he was a villain, who took their kin.. Others reminded them that he had nearly given his life for her.. While others still just remained silent, wanting to tear into him or anyone else for the truth of what had happened. Needless to say, most weren’t happy. But, they still cared for the male as best they could. However a guard was up to make sure he didn’t leave the territory, the main guard being the mother of Selene.. Known as Tessa; who watched over him with slit like eyes as her daughter bolted about searching for him… Ever silent, she looked over to her daughter, before attempting to talk to the male through her link. Wake up. Someone is looking for you.

He felt his body laid out across its side. Sunlight touched against his skin. Soft, gentle sunlight. He was alive...probably. He couldn't react much to this pleasant revelation, so he tried to take a deep breath. A strong pain coursed through the side of his stricken body still which quickly put a stop to that. If he could, he would have winced at that. All he could do was just lie there. Vulnerable. Exposed. Helpless. Why was it that in a time like this, all he could do was be so damn sarcastic? Maybe it was a near death thi- don't push it, could still happen. He still couldn't feel much of his side that took that shot. Maybe right now that actually wasn't a bad thing. All he'd probably feel is pain. Hell, he tried breathing in deeply and that's all that managed. He tried to take in his surroundings. Nope. Couldn't hear what was going on. Couldn't open his eyes either. Why couldn't he? He could think by now, but he couldn't manage anything else. At all. As if he was trapped in his own body. Well, this was awkward. And worrying.
Once more, he tried to take a deep breath, to at least try to get an idea of what was going on around him. Wouldn't he be dead by now if someone hadn't intervened? Like Selene? The pain was like being hit in a pressure point. Repeatedly. Well, through the pain he at least managed to figure out something. There were a lot of night fury's nearby. Oh. Goody. Worst part was he couldn't smell Selene's scent. Was this not Selene's clan that had 'rescued' him? He felt his heart rate climb. Well, at least that worked. Hopefully. He wasn't sure about what else was working in him at this point, which is always a bad sign as an indication of your health. Alright, he had to open his eyes. This was starting to seriously spook him. A mighty mental upheaval went on in his mind, willing his eyes to open. Nope. His mind suddenly lapsed into a sleep.
The sunlight was gone. How long had he just passed out for? Something in his body seemed to awake. His ears. He felt them twitch. They were detecting sound! The sounds he heard, were very, very faint and muffled. Regardless, those same sounds were very, very welcome to him. He heard what must have been at least 20 voices going past him. Shame he couldn't hear what was being said, but hey. This is progress. He lied there for what must have been hours. During this time, those voices had slowly died out, and sometime later re-emerged. He couldn't open his eyes still. Or move his body. Apart from an occasional ear twitch if he was lucky. He took in another deep breath. The pain in his side was still there. Ow. He'd almost forgot he nearly lost his entire right side until then. He smelt something familiar. Almost like...Selene? No. Yes? Yes! Wait, no. Yes! It was unmistakably her scent! If he could, he would be up and moving. Trouble was, he couldn't. Once more sunlight warmed his helpless body. That felt nice. He noticed the voices were...clearer. Not much more, but enough to pick up on a word or two. Wake up. Someone is looking for you. Wha-? He still couldn't see, or move his body. This had his full attention regardless. It had him thinking. This didn't sound like Selene. But, it sounded familiar as well. It certainly wasn't Selene's voice but it had a certain...'something' to it. Family member? Possible. Definitely possible. In what was most certainly the weakest attempt he'd ever considered a link, he managed to stumble out Se...Se..li..ne?

The dragon glanced at the still figure, who seemed to be twitching in the sunlight. Well, it was progress. Slow, steady progress, which was helped by the herbs they kept nearby and on his wounds to help it heal while he was sleeping. And, she thought, he should be feeling the sun, for he was in a well lit area… for as this tribe had learned sunlight seemed to be the best medicine to keep ones mood up. Whether or not it kept them happy, it did one thing that no one else could help him with; it gave most individuals hope. The simple warmth of the sunlight, shining down on them day after day as the simple reminder that they were alive, often was hope enough to one day see the sun and live again. Sometimes it wasn’t enough, but only if they lost hope that they would survive. For if he gave up, than he would be lost. And gazing at him, she could see the fight in him as his ears twitched. Lay still. She commanded, not a question but rather a demand much like a mother would ask of her ill child. His words came weakly through her link, almost like a whisper. She recognized it as her daughters name… The surrounding dragons seemed to faintly hear it and stiffened, a few glancing over to him. Most still wanted to know how exactly he had found Selene, and why he was with her when they had found her.
Eyes for once turned into large pupils at the mention of her daughter. She's alright. Fairing much better then you are. Your braveness saved her life. Next time be more careful, you almost- She almost continued with her lecture, but held back. Perhaps he did not need a lecture on never risking his life like that again. Not when he was so weak. She felt her eyes return to slits, finally looking over to see her daughter approaching. My daughter is on her way to see you. She said through her link, and then added... How do you know my Selene? But before she could hear an answer her daughter had come over, pushing through the crowds of night furies to see Colt. Turning, Tessa walked a short distance off. Her questions would have to wait for later.
---
Her eyes were slits as worry filled her. Someone answer! Colt… Colt! But all the voices were silent in her link; no one seemed to want to answer her, which made her worry all the more. Finally she saw the smaller part of the cove, in a bit of sunlight away from all the brush and trees, where the severely ill were kept. There she saw her mother hovering over a figure. His black scales seemed so familiar. He seemed to be barely breathing. It made her heart nearly stop in her chest. She thundered forward, her paw seemed to be working surprisingly well. A crowd had formed around them, she heard him say her name as she pushed through the crowds. Colt... Colt! I'm here... She called, and finally pushed past all the night furies to be at his side. She vaguely heard her mother talking through her link, but she turned and the conversation was out of her mind before she could catch it.
But her mind was on Colt, and she curled up beside him. In this time she had grown, surprisingly so. She was already twice the size she had been when she had met Colt, and was growing her wings further in wingspan and strength. And with these changes there were more, some that she had yet to realize; her baby like features were gone, instead a graceful elegance to her body and facial features had taken over. In the short time that she had been unconscious, she had grown up. Her wings were already mature enough for flight, making her wonder just how long she had been unconscious for… But it didn’t matter, for as she looked at Colt and his still body, his burn wounds extensive and with some herbs on them, she felt the sorrow creep into her heart. She wrapped a wing around him, placing it over his head and her own, careful to avoid his burn wounds. She was, in her own way, shielding him from the world around him, so it was just him and her again. If this worked, she hoped it would be only her link he could hear... Colt... I need you... Be strong... I... I can’t lose you.. I’m falling for you Colt. You can’t die. You’re the best thing that’s ever happened to me... Please... if you can hear me... Hold on.. please hold on, please fight... For me… She gently nuzzled against his head, tenderly running her warm tongue over his face, careful to avoid any burns as she was doing so. Laying her head close to his, she hoped and prayed that somehow, some way.. he would be okay.
