I just think the big, mean dragon was judged a little too quickly. If it can 'sing' to entice other dragons, then nature designed it to survive in this way. And if dragons can be 'hypnotized' like they were, then you could even turn around and say that dragons were designed by nature to work like a bee hive for the giant dragon. Sure they were scared, but who WOULDN'T be scared of that thing?

Well, you also have to consider this: What other choice did Hiccup and co. have? I mean, there was clearly no chance in hell that talking to it, or asking it to stop was going to do anything, Stoick and a ton of the villagers, and Toothless were already going to/at the island, so there wasn't any way of stopping them from leaving...And obviously, Hiccup couldn't just stand by and do nothing so the big dragon could live its life, as doing so would mean his father, what looks like half the village, and Toothless would all die. And I can guarantee you that would pretty much ruin the poor guy's psyche...
Really, there was no other choice but to kill it.
