I've been wondering about this for some time.
According to the commentary for the movie, the shape of a dragon's pupil indicates whether they're angry or happy.
A narrow shape is anger, a round shape is happy.
Yet, I've only really seen Toothless do this. This is because he was predesigned with this animation as he is the main dragon shown.
But I don't recall any other dragon showing this kind of visual cue, with the possible exception of Meatlug.
Is it because they didn't program the animation controls necessary into the other dragon models?

I'm pretty sure they occasionally do, at least in the movie and the shorts. Much less in the TV series, though. But certainly not for technical reasons, the dilatation controls aren't a big deal compared to other parts of the models.

I have not noticed any dramatic pupil dilation changes from Toothless in the TV series. Maybe I don't pay enough attention to these kinds of cues, but I feel like they've never been in the super-angry narrow shape for any of the episodes. Can anyone give me an example (EP number)?
I think Nadders have never done this, ever. Their eyes are really small and closest to those of snakes to begin with.

I did find one example, although it's an odd source.
When Mildew is running screaming from the Scauldron, it's eyes go into round shape.
And then you see why, it's looking at the flower stuck to him.
Since Scauldrons are found of those flowers, it would make sense that it's happy to see them.
