YEEEEEES! DAVID TENNANT WAS IN THIS EPISODE! *Dance*
This was a really good episode, I especially liked the bit at the end. Probably makes it my favourite one...at least one of my favourite.

Fourth... well, okay, I'm counting the initial kiss on the cheek as well as the kiss from Gift of the Night Fury. But it's nice to know I'm not the only one keeping count. And now I'm watching for kisses every episode. But I do think it was a good episode. Fairly decent flight scenes, as well as the obvious selfless sacrifice. I'm a bit suprised Astrid, warrior she be, didn't win any (or that Stoick wasn't the champion instead of Spitelout)... but I'm guessing this is all done for plot. So I let it slide. Also, I liked that snowflake-ish Thawfest symbol. I need to find that...

I'm a bit late for this, but... This was a great episode; the plot and moral behind it were excellent. Still, I thought the episode focused too much on the Vikings. Before Hiccup disabled Toothless' tail without warning at the end, he said "I'm sorry, Dad." What about "I'm sorry, Toothless?"

Vikings before Dragons... Yeah, I said it. Deal with it.
(I joke, I joke..name that quote!) _____________________
I'm not sure, but it didn't seem really like the dragons really... cared about the competition. Hookfang and Toothless didn't seem extremely competitive with one another, from what I can tell. If I recall correctly, I think Toothless may have actually been a bit annoyed with Hiccup's competitive streak.
On the other hand, Spitelout and Stoick are very competitive, and this is a large family rivalry. Toothless, he was really only causing the discomfort of having to crash, whereas with his father he's crushing the chance of gaining a family honor which is very important to his father (part of me wonders whether or not Stoick catches on at the end that his son threw the race. He was very graceful and fatherly/unclelike towards Snotlout). So for Hiccup in this case it's really his father he has to regret for.
Although I do agree that the dragons need a bit more focus. But, well, I guess it depends on the character. For instance, Toothless deserves more attention than some random village viking, whereas likewise Stoick deserves more attention than some random village dragon.

Vikings before Dragons... Yeah, I said it. Deal with it. (I joke, I joke..name that quote!) You forgot the "Toothless gives Gobber a funny look" in the middle What I meant was that Hiccup might have apologized to Toothless as well as to his dad. But now that I think about it, saying sorry to Toothless right after saying sorry to his dad might take away from the gravity of his apologizing to his dad. But still, I felt a little empty not seeing Hiccup apologize to Toothless. (Well, he almost certainly did after they crashed, but that was not shown.) Oh well. But it was a great episode nonetheless.

This is true. I am missing Toothless's... activeness as well. He's not as animated (drawing pictures with trees and giving Hiccup his large pleading eyes or an enemy his large scowl) so much as he did in the movie, GoTNF.
I'm still relatively suprised that Astrid wasn't more on top of this (she is Berk's premier warrioress after all), and also that Stoick, who was popping dragon's heads at the age of two, wasn't Thawfest champion. I'm guessing this is for the convenience of the plot. But I'm wondering if there wasn't anything more behind this...

I'm also puzzled as to Astrid not winning the Axe throwing event.
It is a weapon she trained with extensively, even to the point of being able to throw it greater distances with pinpoint accuracy.
So, she should at least have won that event, even if she failed all the others.
And it was cute to see her dragon stunt, flipping and jumping along Stormfly in the air.
And yes, I did love the kissing scene. I'm thinking a full kiss from Astrid is worth more then any medal!
If you think about it, Hiccup has the one thing Snotlout wants and can never have, a great girl!
There's a subtext that the girls like Hiccup better then Snotlout! Astrid chose Hiccup, Heather is also fond of Hiccup. And there's a brief subtext that Ruffnut has an interest in Hiccup too, in the movie, before Astrid asserts her dominance and pushes her away.
I get the impression that Toothless wasn't really in favor of winning the event, not when he realized how competive Hiccup was getting about it. So he wouldn't really have minded that Hiccup threw the race, even if it involved a faceplanting into the ground at velocity.
It was interesting to see Hookfang displaying a new behavior. He's normally pretty obstinate, but in one scene, when he realizes Snotlout is getting upset, he gives him an "awwww, I'm sorry for you" sympathetic look.
I also found the Australian pop-culture reference amusing. To explain, there's a chant that goes "Aussie Aussie Aussie, Oi Oi Oi". I don't know what exactly it refers to, but I think it's something to do with sporting competitions. I was surprised that an American company knew of it though!
And I assume the reason why Stoic never won is the random nature of the contest. Suppose they picked random events every contest and the ones that were chosen weren't the ones he was good at? I'm assuming there are things he's not capable of doing.

Thawfest is pretty much tests of strength and combat-skill, which Stoick's relatively the best at.
I have a bit of a theory (relating to both Astrid and Stoick) that it's kind of an unspoken rule that you always let the Jorgenson's win... just sort of because it's their thing to be proud of.

That doesn't really make sense, since Stoick is quite emphatic on the fact that he wants to beat the Jorgensens.
Astrid is different though. She's more interested in doing her best, whether she wins or loses is irrevelant to her. In her own mind, she's a winner, so she doesn't feel the need to have it confirmed.
I expect the reason she fails so often is Fishlegs. In the axe throwing contest, he throws off Astrid's aim because his axe collides with hers.
Then in the log roll, he falls into Astrid, knocking her off the log.
