In December 2010, DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg has confirmed that there would also be a third film in the series: "How To Train Your Dragon is at least three: maybe more, but we know there are a least three chapters to that story."Dean DeBlois, the writer and director of the second and the third film, said that How to Train Your Dragon 2 is being intentionally designed as the second film in the trilogy: "There are certain characters and situations that come into play in the second film that will become much more crucial to the story by the third."DeBlois said in an interview that the third part will be released in 2016. Although the series has taken a different path of telling a story of Hiccup and Vikings, Cressida Cowell has revealed that the trilogy and the book series will share their ends. In September 2012, 20th Century Fox and DreamWorks Animation announced the release date for June 18, 2016. The film is being produced by Bonnie Arnold, and exec-produced by Chris Sanders and DeBlois. All the main cast is set to return in the third film.

They haven't released the seconed movie yet and they have already anouned the thrid movies release date what going on

Not to mention HTTYD 2 won't be released for over a year from now.

How do they have all this stuff all lined up, even outlining stuff in 2016? Well, probably because they know how long things generally take, and they know how many employees are assigned on each project, they can do a pretty safe projection of how long it takes them to push movies through its production pipeline. Not to mention the fact that they are all 3D animations eliminates the uncertainty of weather that can cause trouble when you're shooting live action stuff.

It takes a ton of time to create these kinds of animations, though, so my guess is they're working hard on the second movie right now, and they're already wrapping up things like Turbo.

How come I don't know about 50% of these?

Probably because they're either new franchises or new spins on old cartoons, etc. (P & S, for example, takes the characters from the pretty darn old cartoon show). ADDENDUM: Peabody & Sherman has been pushed back for March 2014 release, and Me & My Shadow seems to have been canceled or indefinitely delayed at least within the 2013-16 timeframe.
BTW, there is absolutely no way DreamWorks can screw up Penguins of Madagascar. It's like their own automatic WIN button.

Returning to HTTYD, though, I would guess they will not change the release dates unless something goes very wrong. With two films planned within a three-year timeframe, DreamWorks is pushing the franchise as much as Kung Fu Panda.
