which is actually one of the biggest reasons for my "Dragons aren't mindless animals" arguement.

Ooh, I was screaming with joy and wonder while watching this episode! Oh, how I cried and laughing, ohh, OMG! :DDDDD Aaaaaaaaaaaa! Oho-ho-ho! Stoick! Oh, oh, Stoick!... Poor Toothless! Wonderful episode! Now I understand why the creators said this was their favorite episode. :3 I loved the music at the end of episode. Great, Stoick now has his own dragon - Thunderdrum - for the entire HtTYD franchise. Did anyone notice Hiccup and Astrid here?

This was my least favourite episode of Season One. I disliked the way Toothless was used like a beast of burden, and how he let Stoick abuse him. It didn't feel right for his character. Stoick should have given up on flying Toothless after the first crash landing, but instead they let that gag run a little too long. When they finally got around to him bonding with Thornado, the episode got much better. I think they should have focused more on that.
Someone else mentioned that Stoick's character seems to change depending on how much conflict is needed -- I agree. He acted completely over the top and silly in this episode.
The visuals were good though...

I get the impression Toothless is trying to set some kind of example, to prove that dragons can live sociably with humans, even despite some weird demands put on them.
So that's why he's not objecting as much as he should, because it will be bad relations.
And yes, I think Toothless does understand human speech, even if he doesn't speak it himself.
Gobber says at one point "Vikings before dragon", Toothless snaps his head up and looks directly at him as if to say "did I hear you correctly?". And Gobber then speaks directly to Toothless in response, indicating an awareness of language.
Still waiting for the episode where Toothless reveals he actually does speak and he was just pretending not to! It's a trick employed sometimes to learn information secretly, if someone thinks you don't understand what you are saying, they'll be quite confident in discussing confidential information right in front of you, thinking you don't understand what they are saying.
For example, there's a commonly used joke where two people are saying something mean about a third person another in another language and then the third person (who was feigning ignorance) suddenly responds perfectly in their language.
Which is what I think Toothless is doing, allowing people to think he doesn't understand what they are saying so he can listen to them and learn all their secrets.

Your theory is an interesting one. I have no doubt that Toothless understands human speech. I'm one of the biggest supporters of the idea of Toothless as being of near equal intelligence to humans.
I'm not convinced the writers put that much thought into his compliance in this episode, but I could be wrong. Either way, the main problem with the episode for me was Stoick's characterization, and the joke being dragged out a little too long.
Hmm... I think having Toothless actually speak would be taking things a bit too far, but to each their own.

I doubt he would speak in English if he did reveal he has the ability to talk.
But it wouldn't be a stretch if the Dragonese language from the books was added to the show.
Not sure how you could introduce that though, since the learning curve would be pretty steep.
Imagine holding up objects one by one and having a dragon speak the word related to it.
And the Dragon Academy students would also have to create a written version of the language, since I don't think Dragons are keen on writing.
I suspect the true reason they don't use the language is it would make the show less dramatic. I mean, if you could solve a dragon's problem by asking them what is wrong, there would be no big scale fights or whatever.
But it could be useful, both for dragon training and a secret language to use against the Outcasts (and their other enemies).
