As suggested here's a thread to discuss the ins and outs of episode 1 to "Dragons: Riders of Berk".
Here's the episode:

Two words: dragon pity.
Seriously that whole scene was just golden.

Yes!!!!! That was my favorite line in that episode.
Aside from the spot on dialogue the lighting in that scene was simply wonderful as well ;D

Agreed. From what I hear, lighting is one of the harder parts of CGI animation. I'm glad it didn't suffer due to a tv budget. Actually, to be honest the only things I though I saw a minor (very minor) dip in quality has hair and freckles. Ther isn't as much and what is there does look as real as in the movie. Overall, I gave it an A in CGI, as opposed to the A+ the movie got

I agree. The hair is a tad more...shiny then in the movie, but at least it still flows and isn't stuck to their heads like most CGI tv shows. And the textures are very good as well even the new leather outfit additions (as opposed to the fur) have really good texture to them...and very nice designs on Gobber's vest and Fishlegs' tunic Easily the best animated CGI show out there, no contest.

Definately. Hell, it rivals some CGI movie's too. Random thought about the first episode: I know everyone is of mixed opinions on the poop jokes in the show, some people were cool with it since there are similar jokes or something in the books, others didn't like it because it is less mature. My only question was, "why is the poop green?"

Thanks Seb! I hate unanswered questions! Now the biologist in me will be thinking about how dragons are inefficient at absorbing the iron from their diets, or are getting too much or it whenever they poop onscreen. Much better than focusing on how immature the poop joke are I guess. Also, now I have my interesting fact of the day!! ;D

I take the poop jokes as a subtle pledge to the spirit of Cressida Cowell. I don't think they'll come up again, but A) it was a VERY REAL logistical problem. XD I'm surprised they had the balls to acknowledge it IN THEIR FIRST EPISODE. and B) The books were chock full of poo jokes. Heck, Toothless remains insufficiently toilet trained throughout the entire series. In the first book, Snotlout's dragon makes fun of him, which motivates him to behave. Later, he poos in Alvin's helmet, setting up part of a blood grudge that spans the entire series. Love it or hate it, it's pretty much a part of the series. I'm not saying there should be repeated poo jokes or anything (and honestly I doubt there will be). But I really do respect the tip of the cap to Cressida Cowell here. I've been taking it as a solemn, intimate pledge to stay in her spirit XD. And given what other surprising bookish things have popped up thus far, it seems like they're making a real attempt; the father/son relationship is spot on, Astrid appears to be on her way to be as massive of a mega-curser as Camicazi, Gobber sings, the way the teens interact, the "bookends" formula where Hiccup clarifies the entire point to you. I've been floored and pleasantly surprised here. It feels like home. As far as Mildew, I effing love that guy, because he INCITES SO MUCH INSTANTANEOUS HATE. SOOOOO effective, oh my gosh. I've heard a lot of complaining about him being put in as a "conflict" character, but I fail to see the problem. He's an important force in these two episodes, where the conflict lies a lot in Hiccup's conscience and confidence. Instead of having Hiccup having to tell us he's second-guessing himself and whatnot, Mildew embodies these doubts and guilts for us in the form of a highly unlikeable character hanging over Hiccup's shoulder. It didn't have to be Mildew. It could've been Astrid or Gobber or someone being this harsh. But we want to still like them. XD I really wonder what Mildew's story is, though. I heard a suggestion that dragons killed his son, which seems plausible, not only because of the dragon-hate, but also because of the way he fixates and picks on Hiccup in particular. Of course, it's equally likely that he's just a big meanie. XD

Hmm, I do agree with Crownflame. The poo thing is a very realistic problem, I mean...animals poop, what are you gonna do about it? In this case they've just gotta mop up the plaza every day. And use their shields as umbrellas. But, they mentioned it, its over, and hopefully that joke doesn't come back to haunt us.

Yeah, my theory is just that it was a question that needed answered, and now that it's answered, they'll drop it. XD

this episode brings a theory as to why specifially the dragon academy was needed.
It's indicated in the book of dragons short that the book was being revised(to show how each specific dragon can be tamed and such), so I guess that was their FIRST attempt in helping the village learn to live with the dragons. However, in the original movie, the teens (except for fishlegs) were COMPLAINING that they had to read the book.
From this I can safely assume that reading isn't exactly a popular pastime for vikings, they'd rather punch each other in the face over reading a book XD
So keeping that in mind, most of the village probably didn't bother reading the revised book, which resulted in wild dragons running amuck in the village, no trainers = no housebroken dragons XD
Thus hiccup(this time with help from his peers) had to prove to everyone AGAIN that dragons arn't what they think they are, they CAN be tamed with proper knowledge and patience, Giving stoik the idea for the academy, with an academy, people who wish to domesticate and learn about dragons can learn with a "hands on" experience as opposed to just reading a book.

you know, Mildew is strange... at first he dislikes the dragons and soon (in future episodes) he wants to make a doomsday device with them.
I wonder, did hiccup spark that interest in mildew? he did kinda (possibly) implanted the idea in his head after they used the dragons as agricultural equipment,
