Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. ^^; Everyone says that Eragon rips off one thing or another...Star Wars...Beowulf...LOTR...Anne McCaffery...and I agree with them. But I still love the books. I used this analogy somewhere else, and I think it fits: when you take chocolate, milk, and ice cream -- all delicious things in their own right -- and blend them together, you get a chocolate milkshake. Its not better than the ingredients, but it's just as delicious. And Saphira is a pretty good character, IMO. Also, I got my copy of Eldest in England and read it in Ireland, so there's some pleasant memories along with that book. ^^ I also enjoyed the movie, but that's just because I love (and I do mean LOVE) corny B-movies. Plus, the guy who played Eragon is rather attractive. So what are yall's thoughs on the whole Inheritance Cycle thing?

I've been a Pern fan for many many many many many many *repeat ad nauseum* years, as well as a big fan of Star Wars and LotR, so Eragon rubs me the wrong way, unfortunately. :/ I mean, it's not badly written, per se. Not as bad as another series of novels I'm particularly not fond of. But I cannot for the life of me swallow how brazenly it rips off a lot of other media.
It could just be me. I don't know. I like Pern. I like LotR. I like Star Wars. They're great on their own. But for me, they're more like... chocolate, sushi, and Hawaiian pizza. They're really awesome by themselves, but putting them in a blender just creates something of a really hot mess.

I mean, it's not badly written, per se. Not as bad as another series of novels I'm particularly not fond of. Why do I get the feeling I know what book series you're talking about? xD Like I mentioned, I do see the rip-offs, and a few segments make no sense to me (like Saphra leaps through the stained glass, and the next chapter they explain, "Oh no, Arya broke the glass, and she kept the glass from hitting you," I'm like, who cares? xD). And I do not like Eragon/Arya. At all. I actually think the series should end with Saphira becoming human for one reason or another, and THAT is who Eragon ends up with. That doesn't make me sound insane at all, does it? TIC is really just a guilty pleasure for me, I suppose you could say. And like I mentioned, my copy of Eldest was bought in England, so it's got some nice memories of that trip whenever I read it. ^^ Ummm...that's all I got, lol.

I read Eragon and Eldest when I was in middle school, and back I thought they were both just magical and amazing stories and I was just so enchanted by it all.
Then when I got older and the rip-offs were pointed out to me, I started to see where some people who totally bash Paolini are coming from. My biggest pet peeve though is how Oromis is described. I don't freaking care how shiny and polished and opal-like and perfectly round his fingernails are.
...Or how hairless his crotch is.
Also! This probably adds points to my creeper factor, but I was actually really hoping for Saphira/Glaedr. But then Saphira had to take rejection the wrong way and Glaedr was a jerk about it, and I was all "Aww c'mon you two! Feel the love!"

The Eragon series is a guilty pleasure of mine. XD I read it years ago, loved it, and still do, but I do acknowledge that it is an epic ripoff of pretty much everything ever and honestly kind of terrible. XD
I fucking love Glaedr, though. He's badass.
(oh god oh god the hairless crotch description oh god why)

The Inheritence Cycle is quite good, in my opinion. Sure, Paolini got some ideas off some other franchises, but he customized it into his own universe. And, you have to admit, the Elvish language is pretty impressive. Overall, Eragon was the best. But, then again, sequels always never seem to be as magical as the original - the curse of any series.

I acknowledge that Inheritance isn't the best series out there, and that it is a bit cliched, (okay, extremely cliched) But compared to a lot of much worse series out there, it isn't really all that bad. EEspecially on TS, I see a lot of people being really harsh about it, and I don't think it's quite as bad as everyone makes it out to be. I mean, when you compare IC and Twilight, for instance, IC looks like freakin Shakespeare. Of course, it doesn't take much for that, but..... still. Yes, I enjoy IC. It's a light read, something I read when I'm not in the middle of a series or deeper fantasy book.

This makes me giggle:
Yeah, adding to what Froggy said, I've actually heard some people say Twilight > Eragon, and I don't personally agree. Eragon had Saphira who, while she isn't the BEST dragon character out there (Toothless pwns her. ^^), she's pretty good. I think.

Pfft! Those Rifftrax were funny. Poor guy, always being wrong about when the movie ends.
To be honest, I did like Eragon a bit, at least enough to be looking forward to other books. Then I read Eldest and found it to be a struggle to get through because of the author's need to describe everything in detail. Montages can be your friend! Then I borrowed Brisingr from a friend, and gave up. The guy is trying too hard to create a classic fantasy story, despite the fact that those are usually a couple decades old, and in the case of Lord of the Rings was written by a man who spent years learning about other languages and how they worked, in a sense. Brisingr opens with Eragon saying to his brother/cousin that the people they're spying on aren't cannibals because they "don't partake of the meat." My, 16-year old farmboy with next to no education, that's quite the vocabulary you have!
There are also many inconsistencies in the writing, but the books can still be entertaining in a guilty pleasure sort of way (to me at least) so I guess they're not all bad.

I'm a big Star Wars/LOTR fan, and I've liked the few Pern books that I've read, so I don't really like how Paolini ripped them all off either, but I've read and enjoyed the books somewhat. I've seen the movie, too, and I thought it was okay, but the books are a lot better!

I'm just thinking of rereading these books. Eldest is probably my favourite. I hope Paolini does book five, as he has commonly hinted at.

Actually, anyone who says Eragon is based on this or based on that is so far off the mark, it's unbelievable. Because I know what it was actually inspired by!
There is a computer game from the early 90s called Drakan. It's my favorite dragon riding game.
But after I'd read the 2nd novel in the Inheritance series, I started to see certain influences from Drakan.
The most obvious one is Surdana. In Drakan, this is the Citadel of the Order where Rynn and Arokh go to live in the second game. In Inheritance, we have a country called Surda. That's too close a similarity to be a coincidence.
Rynn (the rider) is the opposite gender to Arokh (her dragon). Rynn is female and Arokh is male. This also applies to Eragon and Saphira, although the other way around. And like Eragon, Rynn knows some sorcery, in addition to having skill with a sword and a bow.
There is an older dragon of the opposite gender to the lead dragon. Mala Shae (female) for Drakan and Gladr (male) for Inheritance.
Both franchises have a order of Dragon Riders who were destroyed by a traitorous member of their order. Navaros was a battlemage in the Order who destroyed them all (Drakan). Galbatorix hunted down and killed all the Dragon Riders in Inheritance. Both of them had greater then normal strength and power, due to stealing the power of dragons.
Arokh has something in common with Brom, in that he lost his bonded partner during the fall of his Order. His partner died when he defeated Navaros in the final battle.
The Urgals (Inheritance) are similar to the Wartoks from Drakan.
There are evil nonhuman sorcerers in both franchises, Shades for Inheritance and Desert Lords for Drakan.
And there are Spirits present in both of them, a wizard calls upon them for help in Drakan and they are occassional plot points in Inheritance.
