Author's Note: Hi, everyone! This is my first time posting a fanfiction. I'm a little nervous, but I'm all for helpful feedback. I don't wanna go pro or anything (yeah right!!) but criticism never hurt anybody
Oh, and this is loosely inspired by the song "Love Like Woe" by The Ready Set. Great song! I recommend listening to it while or before reading haha. Rated PG, for a little bit of teenage intimacy
Whether or not Hiccup enjoyed being in Astrid's presence wasn't really a question worth asking. Everybody knew the answer.
It showed every time they were together: he stuttered strings of words, blushed profusely, and constantly ran his hands through his hair. She drove him crazy. Everybody knew it, including Astrid herself.
And as she stealthily followed him down the dirt path that stretched a little ways south of their village, winding into the woods, she planned on using this knowledge to her advantage.
She laughed silently to herself as she watched him. Despite his grotesque-looking prosthetic leg, he walked fairly smoothly. But just by looking at him, Astrid could tell his mind was miles away. He walked with his hands in the pockets of his fur vest, his head aimed more toward the sky than the ground. His eyes constantly wandered... from tree to grass, from grass to flower, from flower to bird, from bird to butterfly...
Astrid stifled another laugh, axe in hand. Three... two... one...
"THINK FAST!"
"WHOA!"
In one swift motion Astrid leaped five feat forward and tackled a sickly surprised Hiccup to the ground.
Straddling his back, Astrid put the cool metal blade of her axe to the back of Hiccup's neck. He gasped, and she leaned forward, bent down to his ear, and whispered, "Don't move a muscle if you want to live."
Astrid felt Hiccup's back sink as he heaved an enormous sigh of relief. "Astrid!" he yelled. "You scared half the life outta me!"
"Half?! You were practically begging Odin for forgiveness already! I got at least a good three fourths!" Astrid grinned wickedly and held the axe back against his neck.
"Alright! Alright! You got the whole thing! Just let me go!"
"Hah." Astrid pulled the axe back and de-straddled Hiccup. "You'd think you were scared of me for real or something."
Hiccup rolled his eyes and hoisted himself up. Astrid grabbed one of his arms to help him. "I wasn't... scared," he stammered, brushing the dirt off of his front.
Astrid smirked. She knew him better than he gave her credit for. Let's see just how crazy I can drive him... "Oh really..."
Just hearing that kind of edge to Astrid's voice, that stealthy, but sweetly sly edge, sent chills down Hiccup's neck, goosebumps down his arms, and heat to his face.
Hiccup backed up a little, biting his lip, while Astrid approached him. "Let's play a game, Hiccup..."
"W-What kind of game?"
"Oh, you'll see." She took one step closer, and whispered, "Ready, set..."
"Whoa! Whoa! Astrid! Astrid-" Before Hiccup knew what had happened, Astrid had twisted his arms behind his back and brought her lips to his ear.
"Shhh..." she whispered, before leaning closer and pecking him on the cheek. She saw his eyes close, and his lips curve into a smile in the few seconds before...
"Geez! Can't you give me like a warning or something - OW!" In another second, she had him in a headlock.
"You love it," she said quietly, before running her fingers over his flushed cheek and down his neck. With a little bit of pride, she watched as he closed his eyes again, and smiled again...
While he was in the clouds, she let him out of the headlock, dropped to the ground, and grasped his good ankle with both hands, bringing him to the ground as well. "OW! Astrid!"
Once again, she grabbed her axe, this time using it to jab him once in the small of his back. "Oh, Gods!" he groaned, "Astrid, this whole bi-polar thing you have going on has got to - "
Before he could finish his thought, he found himself sighing due to a most pleasurable sensation on the back of his neck. Astrid was nuzzling her way around his upper back. "Defend yourself, Hiccup..." she whispered, trying not to laugh too much.
"Def- what? WHOA!"
Astrid used all the strength she had to roll Hiccup onto his back. Playfully, though, he struggled against her, which resulted in the two rolling around on the ground several times, Astrid losing her headband and Hiccup losing his vest in the process. It of course ended though, in Astrid triumphant.
She finally sat on his stomach, her legs around his sides, her hands placed firmly on his chest. "Astrid." Hiccup gasped, exhausted, chest heaving beneath Astrid's hands. "If by beating me up, you're trying to tell me something, I beg of you, just come right out and say it instead of... uhh..."
Astrid smiled. She put one finger against Hiccup's lips, successfully quieting him down, before sliding that same finger beneath his chin, down his neck, and across his collarbone.
"Now why would you want me to say how I feel, when I could just show you..."
Astrid leaned in, until her face was but an inch from Hiccup's. "So," Hiccup said, just before Astrid's lips touched his, "What exactly do you call this?"
Astrid giggled. "Call what?"
"This," Hiccup repeated, looking Astrid directly in the eyes, "What do you call it?"
"Hmmm..." Astrid thought, still holding close to Hiccup's lips, "Tough love?" she mused.
"Hah," Hiccup laughed. "Maybe. Love like Berk?"
Astrid smiled. "Yeah."
"Love like a Viking?" Hiccup grinned.
Again, Astrid smiled. "Definitely."
"Love like..."
Hiccup's eyes widened in surprise for a moment, then, very slowly, began to close, as Astrid's lips gently pressed themselves against his own. He felt the goosebumps, the chills, the heat...
Astrid wove her right hand through Hiccup's hair, and kept her left against his chest. She could feel his heart pounding beneath her fingers. It frightened her a little at first, but eventually, made her smile.
For all Astrid and Hiccup knew, it could have been a few seconds, a few hours, a few days... they didn't care. Eventually, their lips parted, and Astrid slowly backed away. When she was sitting upright again, she watched Hiccup amusedly. His eyes were closed, his bangs were beginning to cling to his sweaty forehead, and he was breathing harder than ever.
And after hearing the only thing Hiccup could think to say after that, Astrid knew her mission had been accomplished. One word was all it took.
"Whoa."
