I can see the parallelism between Mildew and Hiccup, but I think it ultimately gives Mildew his motive. Mildew is also quite weak physically, if his body tells me anything. He's smart, clever, and has amazing observational skills. I feel like Mildew is a mirror image of Hiccup, but born at the wrong time. I would guess he is 2 generations before Hiccup, when Vikings were at war with dragons, and from what Hiccup goes through in the movie, you can infer the ordeal Mildew had to go through (still assuming he is one of the "Hiccups"). Hiccup's turning point is when he almost accidentally befriends Toothless, which is quite a bit of luck if you ask me. Mildew obviously didn't get this opportunity, so he didn't get the chance to change the village or achieve something honorable to the Vikings.
And here's where I could draw a line between Hiccup and Mildew: Hiccup is everything that Mildew could have been. Could. Although I can't ignore the multicausality of any human intentions, I think that Mildew's hatred of dragons comes mainly from his hatred of Hiccup, not the other way around. The season finale adds more plausibility to this explanation: Mildew ends up with the Outcasts, which means restoring Berk to pre-all of... this was not his goal. He doesn't even seem to dislike all dragons in the end, even helping Alvin train one. Why would someone who is seemingly oh-so-terrified and disgusted of dragons be helping someone train them, other than that there is a greater personal goal? It makes sense if Mildew's goal is to personally crush Hiccup not through the traditional Viking means but through cunning and intelligence.

I'm assuming Mildew knows about dragons because to know the enemy is to know how to defeat them.
And I don't really like him.
Actually, I'm surprised he's still alive.
Hiccup won't resort to violence to solve his issues with Mildew, but can you really say the same of Astrid or Stoic?
After the flower issue, I was surprised he got to keep his head! At the very least, I expected Stoic to send him into exile, even without any evidence.
And really, how did Mildew look them right and the face and claim he was perfectly innocent in not knowing how the flowers would affect reptiles. I'm assuming he had to know, otherwise he wouldn't have done it.
As Astrid says to him "You appreciate neither happiness nor beauty".
So I don't believe for a second he did it without knowing what would happen to the dragons.

Hiccup wouldn't have punched his lights out like that when the threatened to give up Hiccup to Alvin. Mildew is crafty. He didn't poison the dragons by putting something in their food or their waters. No, he hid the poison in plain sight and prepared a semi-believable explanation for why it was there. The Vikings knew that flower (that's the only way the Book of Dragons could have mentionned it as part of the Scaldron's diet) but had no idea of its special properties before Fishlegs read his botany book. No one could realistically expect Mildew to know about those properties when no one else did. Of course Mildew did it on purpose. He's just good at lying and he is a good enough planner to prepare something up in case the flowers got discovered. Plus Mildew gave up his flowers as soon as he was asked, so he showed some good will, in a way.

I got the impression that's more out of fear out of what Stoic would have done to him then out of any genuine feeling of mercy.
If he didn't try to fix the problem, the case against him would have been proven and he'd have been sentenced to whatever punishment Stoic had in mind.
And yes, given that Astrid didn't hesitate to knock him out when his true colors were shown, I'm surprised she hasn't done something worse to him. Keep in mind this is a girl who owns an Axe!

But you can't sentence someone on what you think are his intentions, you need facts and proofs. And yes, given that Astrid didn't hesitate to knock him out when his true colors were shown, I'm surprised she hasn't done something worse to him. Keep in mind this is a girl who owns an Axe! I'm not sure that Astrid is willing to be sentenced to death or exile because she murdered an 'helpless' old man.

Well, given the rather menacing statement Stoic makes, I get the impression that if Mildew didn't "volunteer" to help catch the Scauldron, something worse would have happened to him.
Let's face it, when the Chief of the Village, the Chief's son and his friends suspect you of trying to kill their dragons, finding an unbiased jury is going to be tricky. Especially when you've just admitted to planting the flowers. Also, you have to factor in that Mildew isn't that popular, so he would have few defenders.
I'm assuming Astrid isn't that ruthless, but if pushed too far, she might do something pretty unpleasant. Let's face it, even getting a beating from Astrid with her bare hands is not likely to be a pleasant experience. It won't be fatal, but it will still hurt!

Berk is a hereditary chiefdom with no apparent council of any sort. So far as we've seen, Stoick's word largely goes, with perhaps also input from Gothi as village elder. Although we've also seen that Stoick is held accountable. He just can't banish anyone he felt like. The village demands he be just. And he is.

Well, it's complicated.
In societies like this, you have the group condemning you and the group defending you. The largest group wins.
Seeing as Mildew has few (no!) friends, I doubt there would be many people moving over to the "defend" side.
As regards the Council situation, I assume Gobber is also a person of influence.
Let's assume that situation was taken to it's logical extreme, that all the Dragons affected by the plant died. How likely is it that Mildew would get fair treatment? He'd probably have Stoic pull his head off with his bare hands!
At the very least, Mildew is guilty of attempted dragonslaughter, that can't be denied. Given that it is publicly known he hates dragons, I'd just exile him so I'd never have to deal with the problems he has caused and the ones he will cause in the future.

You never know. Berk could also establish a Thing. I like Things. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thing_(assembly)Traditional Norse Law from the time may or may not also allow Hiccup to settle the matter by fighting Mildew in the field of one-to-one combat. Now that would be a fun episode.

That would be a pretty short fight.
Mildew's not exactly in his prime and even though they haven't discussed Hiccup's ability to fight, I'd still put money on him to win.
I think choosing exile over certain death in a duel would be a better choice, at least for Mildew.

I have a feeling Mildew could survive in a scrap though. I'd assume he'd fight as dirty as allowed, however. I could see him using that staff with some gusto.
