I'm yet another person who thought it was going to suck. I didn't really even see any spots for it, I was in that phase where I thought anything Dreamworks was automatically crap. So then my friend told me he was going to see it, and I said I didn't think it was going to be good and he said he didn't either but since he was a huge dragon fan he felt he had an obligation to see it.
So the weekend went by, and he saw the movie. Monday came, and on the bus on the way to school he told me about how it was his new favorite movie. He tried to get me to see it, and at first I was hesitant, but then he eventually convinced me to check it out when I could. So a few weeks later, me, him, and two of my other friends were planning a movie trip, and then we would go to one of our houses and film a YouTube video (you know, just for kicks). The movie was between HTTYD and Clash of the Titans (having now seen both, the choice is a no-brainer). We decided on HTTYD, and saw it in IMAX-3D. I LOVED it. ESPECIALLY the 3D experience. I immediately decided that I was going to buy the DVD when it was released.
However, I did not like it as much then as I do now. It pretty much grew on me over time. For instance, back then I considered it one of my favorite movies, but not in my top ten. Now it's tied for first place. I'm even considering letting it win, because it's much more important to me personally than the others.
So... yeah. That's pretty much it. I did lose interest in it during 2011, but on the anniversary of it's DVD release I watched it again and my love was rekindled. In fact, it was stronger than it ever was before.

Ok, like you all, I saw the first preview when it was in theaters and I thought it was gonna be bad. When it came out on DVD, my parents rented it frm BlockBuster, and I read the back of it, and I commented to myself (sorta myself): "Hiccup? What kind of name is that?" I looked at the cast and crew list at the bottom. I saw it was based off a book by Cressida Cowell. I didn't know that at the time. My mom said she saw the book in the store. I thought HTTYD was gonna be horrible, but I ended up falling in love with our favorite Viking, Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third. (I just noticed he has two of the one letter side by side in each of his names; two c's, two r's, two d's). I think it was during the Forbidden Friendship scene. My dad said, when Hiccup got his shield stuck in between the two rocks, "Is he really that dumb?" I kinda felt bad for Hiccup when my dad said that. I've been obsessed since Saturday, October 16, 2010. It's been 22 months. I'm still going strong. I've got the soundtrack and the movie on my black iPod Touch (originally on my old purple iPod Nano). I've got the first Double Dragon DVD pack with HTTYD and LotB (kept that poster), the second Double Dragon DVD pack with GotNF and BoD (kept that poster too). I've done a ton of fan art and put it in my How To Train Your Dragon Fan Art by Becky Nance HTTYD Fanatic. I have also done a ton of fanfics, incl. a parody to the 12 days of Christmas. I have a Night Fury action figure that flies. A stuffed roaring Nadder and Red Death. My mom didn't know it was the Red Death (got it for Christmas 2010, along with the first DVD pack). Whew! Sorry if I bored you guys! I start talking about HTTYD and I just can't stop! Okay, that's all for now! Byeeee!

Ah I remember my first time seeing it, it was in theaters with my friends.
though unlike most here, I actually WANTED to see the movie ever since I first saw the trailer during an earlier movie trip. The reason why? well you guys may not know this but I am BIG fan of Chris Sanders, have been ever since I first saw lilo and stitch. I've been reading for quite some time before I saw the HTTYD trailer that Chris was working on his next film under a different studio, I've always wanted to figure out what that movie was.
But my question was answered when I first laid eyes of toothless in the trailer, I RECOGNIZED that toothless in appearance looked VERY similar to stitch in a way (I think it was his legs, eyes, and face that gave it away) Since then I made it a personal goal to see HTTYD, and sooner, when was out in theaters, I was able to get the chance! When I was seeing the movie, it was like magic all over again for me. Despite it being based off of the children's novel of the same name, it still felt like a fresh, new, and stunning story to me; just as lilo and stitch was.
So, yeah, I knew this movie was gonna be good from the beginning. XD

I'm another person who was skeptical of the film's quality when I first saw the trailers. I wanted it to be good, but after some of the other Dreamworks movies like Shrek the Third and Over the Hedge? Yeah, I was wary. Plus, I didn't know that Chris Sanders was helming it at the time.
But luckily I am a HUGE sucker for dragons, and the second I saw Toothless in the trailers, I pretty much said, "Alright, I'll go see this movie, just because of HIM!" Cute little winged axolotl critter = instant win, though from the trailers I hadn't realized his teeth were *supposed* to be retractable and had written it off as a continuity error, lol.
I did see it on opening day, as that happened to be my first day of spring break that year. I went with my grandparents, my mom, and my mom's best friend--the latter two of that group are also big dragon fans, so naturally they had to come.
And I gotta say, INSTANT LOVE. It'd been a while since I got that into a piece of fiction, so I was definitely overdue. Not only did Toothless end up as epic as I'd hoped, but so did the other characters, particularly Hiccup and Astrid. Plot ended up surpassing my expectations too, especially when they had Astrid keep Hiccup from running away; when he had said, "I'm so leaving", I was expecting something a-la Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, where the main character leaves home, then there's a time skip, and *then* finally he comes home to show how badass he is now. Having Astrid stop him from leaving and inadvertently make Hiccup finish the character growth he started in a matter of days was a brilliant choice, as you actually get to see the change in him as it happens rather than having it happen off-screen a-la Rudolph, and it kept the pacing nice and quick.
My main regret is that while I saw it twice in theaters, NEITHER time did I see it in 3D! *HEADDESK* I am STILL kicking myself for that. The first time it was because we weren't sure if the plot was going to be worth the extra cost of the extra dimension, but I haven't the foggiest why we saw it in 2D again the second time. >.< (I'm secretly hoping that some theater will re-run the first film in 3D immediately prior to the sequel, like at a midnight release or something. It's a long shot, but I can dream. XD)

I first saw the trailer when I saw Planet 51. I'm a fan of good dragons, so my first thought was: 'Oh, no; how are they going to torment dragons this time?' But, then I heard Hiccup's line: "Everything we know about them is wrong." That piqued my curiosity. My anticipation for the movie increased every time I watched a trailer or TV spot for it.
I saw it for the first time in the theater on the first day. I saw it three more times in the theater--twice within a week of my first viewing (once in 3D).

I first saw it at a friends house. Strangely enough, I didn't like it and did not end up watching it the whole way through. I made it to about...the training scene with the Zippleback before I called it quits.

I first saw it on DVD at my house. I was very sceptical until the scene when Hiccup first enters Dragon Training and Fishlegs is spouting off those facts. Then I just enjoyed the rest of the movie, and even enjoyed the first part on a second viewing.

This was inspired by a board over at KataangForever (a forum for Avatar: the Last Airbender). So, basically the title says it all. What was your first viewing of the movie like? Did you see in theaters, IMAX, or on DVD? How did you hear about it? What did you think before you saw it and afterwards? For me, I saw my first trailer of the movie while watching Avatar in theaters, and it was this trailer. To be honest, I wasn't impressed. My mother asked me if I wanted to go see that and I just said it looked like another stupid dreamworks movie. It wasn't until I saw a tv spot months later (maybe about a week before the movie came out) that I thought, okay, maybe it isn't that stupid. Mainly because the tv spot featured a lot about the romantic flight and I thought the scenery was amazing. So, I went on the internet and looked up the trailers, and the sneak peeks that they had and I think it was the final theatrical trailer that made me say "yeah, I wanna see it". So I saw it the second day it came out in 3D (which I actually didn't want to see it in 3D but that was the only way they had it at the time) and I just was so pleased with the whole thing. It was pretty much the best movie going experience I've ever had. So much that I went to go watch it again the next weekend and continued to watch it bootleg until they released it on DVD. So...what's your story? Okay, I know the first post was like forever ago, but I just gotta comment. In the final trailer, when Hiccup said "It's okay. I'm not gonna hurt you," my heart melted....anyway...I probably already posted my first viewing, so...yeah...

I saw it in the fall of 2011 when my brother brought it over. I cried at the end and danced with the credits. I didn't think I'd like that much at first but it had me hooked in ten seconds flat with the epic detailed background.

Well unlike most people I didn't want to see the movie because I had read the books when I was young and I wasn't the biggest fan of the book series (mind you I only read up to book five at this time, but I have read all but #11 so far now) and I only saw it Halloween day ain 2010 in my school and I loved it so much I forced my dad to buy it (but we rented it at Blockbusters at fisrt) and then I got the video and I was so happy.
And I am very displeased with how many people never heard of the book series until a year after the movie came out. So yeah me? I did not want to watch it because I feared it would be as bad as the first few books were.

Can this apply to the second movie as well?
I didn't see HTTYD in the cinema but I bought it on DVD but I loved the trailer I saw on the Dreamworks video podcast which I loved since I love dragons and Toothless was adorable
When I saw the second one two days ago, there were a lot of people like kids, babies and teens and it was awesome and there was a dead silence during a certain emotional point but I had my eyes shut tight but I knew what was happening.
I wanted to clap af the end but was consumed by feels

My first viewing of the movie... I heard my friends talk about How To Train Your Dragon 2 and I was like 'WTH yes xD!!!' BT unfortunately, we didn't watch it! We've spent a lot of time in the cinema before httyd 2 was coming out, so my mom was like:'errrrr NO.' my heart broke. So yeah, I watched trailers, sneek peaks, I bought figures, but I couldn't watch it. Until... I FOUND THE WHOLE MOVIE ON YOUTUBE!!! XD In parts, but it was the whole MOVIE! For me, it was quite hard to understand. I am Dutch, and offcourse at school we don't learn dragon/viking terms. But I saw it XD! Sorry about my very, very tragically story. I hope you didn't fell asleep :-P ^-^ A mysterious dragon trainer (LOL I'm not mysterious I am Krisona in SoD :-))
