The night air caressed the face of Tainted Fang as a nice stroke. The Toxic Nightshade closed his amber eyes, trying to enjoy that feeling. His marks were glowing with an spectral purple, but that didn't was a problem ... rather an advantage, because predators would know that he was a terrible and dangerous dragon that shows no mercy with anyone.
That was precisely his curse. After he was banished for his own kind because he didn't behave like a ruthless hunter, Tainted hadn't been with any other dragon... or human. Fortunately, the conversation of two dragons that he could hear that morning restored his hope. Vikings who train dragons! It was perfect! He could finally get a place among humans! No one would flee from him anymore!
He was excited, and his mind imagined how it could be along all the day. He couldn't wait to arrive to the island of Berk, but unfortunately he had been flying all day, didn't know where was exactly the island and he was really tired. Tainted looked away from the horizon towards the sea that lay under his wings. There was a small rocky island that could be used as a shelter to rest. He descended into it, landing on a cliff. He took refuge from the cold huddled in a cleft in the rock and coiled on itself, yawning, relaxing his muscles and closing his eyes.

Indigo had settled herself on the brink of her clifftop home, having watched the sun dip low over the waters surrounding Berk as the night crept onto the island. The wind was steady and cool tonight, blowing gently over her bluish-black scales and cooling her from a long day basking out in the sun.
This was by far her favorite part of the day, and usually if the wind conditions were just right Indigo would have loved to go for a long flight around Berk, just to catch the sea breeze before it stilled for the night. She had even spread her wings out just for the occasion, waiting until the wind shifted enough so that she could glide to the east end with little resistance. However, the shadow of an approaching dragon kept Indigo from leaving her perch, and instead her ruby red eyes caught sight of the newcomer as it glided to a nearby cliff to rest.
A territorial urge flashed briefly in the back of Indigo's mind, and she let out a low growl as the dragon curled up to nest in a cleft of rock. She wasn't much of a welcome wagon when it came to meeting new dragons who arrived on the island, especially ones who decided to call her cliffs home. She rose up on her hind legs and bared her teeth, letting out a short roar as a warning to the newcomer.
Oi! What does this look like, a bed and breakfast? Hop it, you freeloader, before I push you off of here!

The sound of a growl and a beating of wings roused Tainted. He immediately got up to see another dragon, a female Night Fury in front of him. His first reaction was to adopt a defensive position, arching his back and bowing his head, setting his tail in front of him as a barricade. However, the other dragon didn’t attack, at least not immediately.
-I’m sorry I’m sorry! I didn’t know this cliff was yours.-he said honestly.- But hey! There are a lot of cliffs in this island, do you mind to lend me this one just for tonight?-he added with a soft voice and smiling in the way he learned from humans.
It was sure that the Night Fury would protect her territory with teeth and claws, but he had to show her he didn’t want to claim the cliffs.
-We don’t need to fight for this, don’t you think?-her red eyes were so creepy…- I’m just trying to rest before sunrise to keep looking for the Berk Island.-an idea came to his mind.- Do you know where it is?

Lend you the cliffs? So you can what, catch me in my sleep? Indie growled again, poising herself on the brink of her home. I'm not that stupid, mate. I don't know how many of your little friends you've got hiding around here, but I'm not going to take crap from some other dragon just because he's bigger than me! She swooped down to the other dragon's ledge, landing on her rear legs in an attempt to make her look larger and scarier to the intruder.
Since the other dragon had assumed a defensive rather than predatory stance, Indigo assumed that this dragon would be easy to defeat if he posed to be a problem in her cliffs. He had told her that he wasn't here to fight...but then again, that had been the claim of several other dragons who had passed through the cliffs. However, they had attacked her, called her a traitor, left her cave robbed of food while she lie there, all because she had shown them a little hospitality. And since she was smaller and weaker than the other dragons of her species, how could she stop them?
However, before she attacked, the dragon asked her another question that stopped her in her tracks.
Do you know where Berk Island is?
Immediately, Indigo lowered her wings in surprise. He was looking...for Berk? But why? There was nothing good about the island; nothing there but Vikings who had nothing better to do with their lives than hunt dragons. And the dragons they didn't hunt...well, she had heard of them capturing wild dragons and forcing them to carry riders, as if they were pack animals.
However, this did add credibility to his "weary traveler" tale, so Indigo felt safe enough to drop her guard even a little bit, lowering herself back on all fours and cocking her head at the newcomer.
Why on Earth would you want to go there? she scoffed, folding her wings back along her back. It's not far from here, but unless you would love to have your freedom stolen, I wouldn't recommend the place for anyone.

The Toxic Nightshade stepped back, pressing his body against the rocks, as he saw the other dragon in an attitude even more threatening. He didn’t want to fight it, but it seemed he had escape, so if she really decided to attack, he would be forced to defend himself.
However, he was grateful to see that the Night Fury relaxed a bit to hear his question. He did the same, sitting on his back legs and listening to the dragon more and more surprised. Those vikings capture the dragons and forced him to be ridden? That couldn’t be true! Impossible! Tainted was too optimistic to be so easily depressed. Perhaps that dragon was confused with another village...
-Sorry, but I can’t belive you. I’m sure that’s not the Berk I heard about.
"Why on Earth would you want to go there?"
Why? Tainted didn’t have to think much the answer.
-Because something inside me says I should. Although everything you said is true, I must try.
Tainted stared at the glowing red eyes of the Night Fury with confidence in his face.
-I want to believe I've finally found my place.-he smiled again.- I want to belive that I won't be alone anymore.

Indigo grew more and more confused as the newcomer gave his reasoning for wanting to set foot in the Viking village; giving her some obviously self-generated fantasy about finding a place and not being alone any more. When he was finished, he twisted his mouth into an odd, unnatural-looking curve; which to the Night Fury looked painful, but the other dragon did it with ease.
You must be out of your mind, Indigo shook her head at the newcomer. But if you insist, I won't stop you. Throwing your life right out the bloody window...pathetic. She turned her back on the bigger dragon, preparing to take off. If you take off from here, you should reach Berk in a few minutes...like I said they're not far. She eyed the black and purple dragon, as if he would pounce on her at any moment. She began to tense again, just in case he did take that opportunity while her back was turned. Go ahead and use the cliffs [here...but so help me, if you even think of jumping me...you will pay.

Tainted looked at the expression attempt of the Night Fury amused, but before he noticed, she was going to take flight.
-Hey, don’t say those ugly words! Why are you so… hostile? I didn’t do anything to upset you!-he stopped suddenly.- Well, I accidentally landed on your cliffs, but I already told you that I’m sorry! C’mon, don’t be so grumpy!
When he looked at the Night Fury’s eyes, Tainted could see that something happened to her. He stood on his four legs again and walked carefully towards the Night Fury, tilting his head to one side to look her at the eyes again before she could take flight.
-Maybe I’m not the only one who needs to find his place.

Before Indigo could catch the breeze, suddenly the dragon got up from his spot, walking over to her and looking her in the eyes, as if to catch her gaze for one last moment before she took to the skies. Annoyed, the Night Fury turned again, avoiding the dragon's looks if she could. She preferred not to speak to him anymore; she didn't even trust him! However, he seemed persistent, especially with his last few words. Maybe I'm not the only one who needs to find this place.
Me? Go to Berk?! Indigo growled again, looking in the direction of the village. You can go if you want, but I'm not stupid enough to hand myself over to the humans. I don't know where you got the idea that Berk was a happy place anyway...the humans I've heard of are vicious beings. Indigo turned to stare the dragon right back, her red eyes locking with his yellow ones. Speaking of which...where are you from? Where have you been that you've grown to trust those monsters?

Now Tainted knew he was right.
-Calm down or you will drop your scales!-he said lifting one of his front legs. - Why are you so sure about that? Have you seen the Vikings with your own eyes? You don’t trust anyone, so why should you trust in whoever said that? I…
"Where are you from? Where have you been that you've grown to trust those monsters?"
The Night Fury interrupted him with her question. This time, Tainted Fang didn’t say anything immediately.
-I… I come from a faraway place, from a nest of... monsters. There are Vikings too, but the dragons hunt them and destroy their villages, so they hunt us and destroy our nests as well. That’s why we can’t trust each other! But if… someone changes that… if someone proves that things doesn’t have to be like this…-he remained silent for a few seconds, reminding his own past.- I tried, but failed. That’s why the other dragons banished me and Vikings attacked when I showed myself.-he looked again at the Night Fury’s eyes.- That’s why I thought that if I could learn human behavior maybe they will accept me, so I could prove dragons and Vikings aren’t meant to be enemies! We can change that!

By this point, Indigo had almost completely forgotten about leaving the strange dragon to his own devices, instead listening to his story about the land he had come from; a faraway place where not only had the Vikings chased him out, but his family had too. Well...Indigo couldn't really contest with that...she'd never even had a family to begin with.
As the traveler finished, the Night Fury sighed, folding her wings along her back and turning so that she could look the new dragon directly in the eyes.
And what if Berk's Vikings chase you away as well? Learning their behavior won't make you a Viking; won't make you any more like them. There are generations of dragon-killers in that village, and you think that a few months of learning their behavior is going to stop them? She shook her head, pausing momentarily. ...You're out of your head, obviously...but you seem convinced that whatever you have planned will work. She glared back up at him, sitting up on her haunches as tall as she could. I don't usually do this...but if you seem so convinced, I will at least fly with you to Berk in the morning. How does that sound?

Tainted Fang laughed.
-That’s obvious! A dragon is a dragon, a Viking is a Viking… but what if I prefer to be more human than dragon? I find humans so fascinating! Did you know that they never use their front legs to walk? And did you know that their hair is different on each one? And…
Tainted coughed, ashamed because of his enthusiasm about humans.
-Sorry… what I mean is… I want to try! I want to be more like them! I want to learn all about humans! Even their language! If I do, they will accept me! They won’t run or attack me anymore!
He couldn’t contain his happiness when he heard that the Night Fury was going to fly with him to Berk.
-Thank you! Thank you!- he took a few steps toward her.- If I’m right… will you stay? You could find what you need too! And if I’m wrong and they are… like you said… well, I will apologize! And I will do whatever you want for all the problems.-Tainted stood up on his back legs and crossed his chest with a claw like he had seen on humans. - Promise!
Suddenly, the spikes of his head arched down.
-By the way, did you told me your name? Mine is Tainted Fang, but call me Tainted.-in the same position, he lifted one paw in front of the Night Fury… like humans used to do.

Indigo glanced warily at te dragon's extended foreleg, not sure what to think of this strange gesture. It was obviously learned from the humans; she had never seen a dragon use such a sign before on his own will. Maybe it was the same with the strange way he had curved his mouth at her too. After all, it did seem like he had learned quite a bit from the humans from the way he blathered on about them.
Tainted, the Night Fury repeated, cautiously reaching forward and touching her front leg to his, glancing up at him to read his reaction. She wasn't sure what she was doing, but considering Tainted wasn't baring his teeth or making any other sign to attack, it must be a friendly gesture. I call myself Indigo, after the color. Make of it what you will. She placed her foreleg back to her side, then lowered herself back onto all four legs. That thing you do with your leg, she said. Was I doing it right? Is that another human thing, like your odd, curving mouth?

Tainted stared at the paw of Fury Night when she returned the gesture. It was the first time someone did something like that with him... Actually, it was the first time he spent all that time with someone.
-Nice to meet you, Indigo.-he said, grinning.
He lowered himself back onto all four legs too a listened really amused Indigo’s comment.
-You show a lot of promise! But next time try to shake your paw and smile! No one shakes paws with a grumpy face.-Tainted imitated Indigo’s face with a funny voice, trying to make her laugh at least at once.- I think we need some rest for tomorrow, don’t we? It’s going to be a great day! I can smell it!

When Tainted mimicked Indigo with an odd tone to his voice, her optics only widened in incomprehension, not fully getting the gist of his humor. Maybe it was a human thing. She nodded in agreement, however, to his statement saying that they needed their rest. Oh yes, we're going to need to be all nice and perky for the humans, don't we Tainted? She chuckled a bit, wandering a little bit from the traveler's side to find a comfortable place on the cliffs. She didn't feel like flying back to her ledge right now...she would just have to hope all of her "decorations" were still in place when she returned sometime tomorrow. She sighed, blowing a ring of her blue-and-yellow fire and curling up in the center of it to keep warm.
Indigo was still on the edge about visiting the Vikings, but somewhere inside her was convinced it would be best that if Tainted was to see them for what they really were, maybe he would drop his fantasy of finding a place among them. She pitied him, truthfully, even though Indigo herself had never felt loneliness to the degree that Tainted exhibited. Indigo had been alone most of her life, isolating herself from the other wild dragons that constantly jeered at her, attacked her in mid-flight, and stole her food. She didn't fit in with the rest of her kind; the odd coloring of her eyes and the fact that she was about a foot smaller than the other Night Furies may not have been much of a difference in human eyes, but in dragon hierarchy she stuck out like a sore thumb. She literally had no other choice than to keep to herself, defending her solitary nest and avoiding detection by the Queen.
Indigo rested her head beneath the crook of her wings, her ruby-red eyes closing slowly after casting one last look in the direction of the foreign dragon. Good night, Tainted, she said sleepily, even though it appeared as though the purple-and-black dragon had already drifted off to sleep.
***
Indigo was jolted awake the next morning by the bright sunshine seemingly directed full force into her eyes, followed by the faraway sounds of Nightmares and Nadders hunting the pastures for their morning meals. The Night Fury let out a small, annoyed growl and blinked away the pain of the sudden light exposure, shaking her head as she spread her wings out to stretch them. She rose up from her spot, fanning away the smoke from the fire ring she had lit to keep herself warm during the night, and glanced over to where Tainted had fallen asleep.
Oh, that's right, she mused privately to herself. I'm supposed to be showing him to the humans today. She rose up on her hind legs, letting out a short, piercing roar in hopes it would be enough to rouse the foreign dragon from his slumber. Up, you! she yelled, baring her teeth and nodding her head upwards. You had a village to get to, remember? Up and at it, we've got to get moving!

Tainted was really tired because of his last day flying nonstop. He opened his eyes slowly when he heard Indigo’s steps, and when she let out that short roar, Tainted couldn’t help but jumped in surprise. His tired face disappeared immediately as he reminded that Indigo was going to go with him to the Viking’s village. He smiled, cheerful, roaring with happiness as he pushed his new and first fella to the cliff’s edge.
-Let’s go! Let’s go! Hahaaa!!-he laughed as they fell, opening his wings and catching the first airstream.- C’mon Indie! It’s impolite to be late!
He did several loopings, playing with the airstream. He never had so much fun! But suddenly, his stomach growled.
-Woops… This is so embarrassing…-he laughed again, slowing down.
