"It's only fun if you get a scar out of it."
Yep, the one girl you KNOW can kick your butt can be discussed right here! XDDD I don't have too much to say myself really, but I'm not saying I don't like her, I just didn't get attached to her like I did with the others I've posted up so far. But that's juyst me, what about all you out there?

Astrid= KICK ASS.
Seriously, she is awesome! One of my top female characters! I don't know why, but I love her. Maybe it's her attitude? How she came to start helping Hiccup? Or may it's the fact that she has that epic rocker skirt? I don't know!

I loved her character design... Just her shape, clothes, face, hair... they really nailed it. She was also a bit of a bitch. And as most of you know from the 9 fandom, I love my bitchy female characters!

Although I still think she was too goffick (the eyeliner, emo hair, and skulls on her rocker outfit, I think are what make me think of her as 'goff'), I must admit she grew on me as a character. She was tough and independent, but not so much so that she denied her feelings for Hiccup. Nice balance there.

I really rather like Astrid. I think I pointed this out somewhere else, but I don't see a girl who completely hated the boy to start with. She wanted him to stay out of the way and out of trouble, true... but she really started throwing the anger around when he suddenly became leaps and bounds better than her.
That said, "goth" isn't really what I'd peg her with so much as modern punk. There'd be a whole lot more black and spikes for the modern "goth kid" look. They can overlap sometimes, though.
But I digress.
(...and I'm one of the ones who finds Hiccup/Astrid absolutely adorable, which I will not deny. Uwahahaha-*SHOT*)

(Hiccup/Astrid is SO CUTE)
Yes, Astrid is more Punk Rocker than Goth. Given her temper, this fits in even better. XD

lol, true on both accounts. Even though Hiccup/Astrid was kinda...tacked-on...it was still adorable. I went 'awwww' whenever they kissed.
And you know, now that you mention it, she *does* seem more rocker than goff...actually, when you think about the teens, they *all* have that rockstar vibe to them...omg, they're not Vikings! They're rockers!
Seriously, give them all rock band instruments and put Hiccup on lead vocal, what do you have? THE MOST KICKASS BAND IN THE WORLD, excuse my french. I would totally see them in concert. :3

Oh, how I do love her bitchy attitude and her character design. She was interesting, although I wasn't attached to her as I was toward the other characters. And even though Hiccup/Astrid seemed to be a pairing just thrown in there for some romance, and I don't necessary like it, it was really cute to me.

Astrid is very tough and its look with the skulls is formidable. I do not like tuft above the eye: smacks too much of Emo
Astrid is the only one not kidding Hiccup and makes me think that she Hiccup to admire the tenacity (because we must recognize that Hic is tough) but also considers weak and therefore not worthy of attention. Hiccup when she becomes better becomes jealous and furious. And finally when she discovers her secret / Toothless admires him
This girl has too many changes of mood in this movie XDD

I liked her for the fact that she managed to carry that female dog-y attitude throughout the whole movie, and she managed to be the love interest, yet, it didn't seemed all cliched to me. We all knew the character role she'd end up playing at the beginning of the movie, yet it's not cliched. They somehow pulled it off.
In other words, I loved her. She kicked butt.

Oddly, she is not very cliche at all, like you said.
She could have been, but they handled her in a way that was tasteful and made you actually like her. They made her relateable and understandable.

I think they nailed it by NOT making her pick on Hiccup, like the others did. Like in the beginning of the film, when they're all teasing him, she is kind of sitting in the background like "Whatever." Her only negative comments towards him are training/fighting related. So in that regard, they show she's very dedicated to her future. The most dedicated out of the bunch, I think. While the others are in it for the glory and scars, mostly, she's more focused on not getting killed.

If she was in the modern era, I would classify her as a "determined tunsdere career girl". Yes, I have classified characters like this before, it's a thing...
The way she doesn't really mind him until he gets in her way and/or starts to out do her makes her sympathetic really. That must have been HORRIBLE for her, to have the worst person in the class shoot up through the ranks so quickly.

Part of me thinks that 95% of the hate I've seen her get on dA and other places is that she gets Hiccup. It happens nine times out of ten with a female character that gets the main lead character (see: Sally Acorn in the old Sonic comics). Thing is, she's a pretty normal girl. I knew girls like her in high school. I wasn't one of them, but I did know them. They were the athletic, popular girls who didn't much like being popular, and weren't so much friendly with the outcast kids as they just left them alone. They didn't see a point in harassing them so long as they were left alone as well.
She never hated Hiccup. She was frustrated when all of a sudden he was better than her at what she was best at, of course, but unlike the other kids, who were your typical jockish bullies, she didn't really mind him. Her expression in the early scene with the other kids harassing Hiccup wasn't even so much "whatever" as it was "come on, guys, knock it off... he's beating himself up bad enough as it is."
Her turn toward actually liking him is pretty typical for most teenage romances as I observed them in high school, too. Especially after he and Toothless took out the Red Death... and that one even goes further for Viking society in a nutshell. Hiccup would've been a favorable mate after that, and one her family would've approved of.
I read way too much into stuff like this, but I really like Astrid. She felt just fine and well put together. She filled the role we knew she was there to fill without coming off as too forced.
And to quote a friend of mine, did anyone notice that Astrid kinda looked like a much younger version of the Elder? We got to discussing that the Elder could've been her grandmother, which would've so added insult to injury when Hiccup was chosen over her as best-in-class at dragon training. XD
