I'll be posting these on fanfiction.net soon, but for now I'll put them here.
Hiccup looked down at his reflection in the water, his one green eye staring back at him. He lifted his hand and touched the eye patch where his right eye use to be. He frowned and stood up cautiously, trying not to fall over as he put his weight on his right leg. The prosthetic left limp gave a little creak as he began to walk towards where Toothless sat, watching him anxiously. With a sigh Hiccup plopped down next to his friend and crossed his arms.
Today was one of those days; one of those days when he would visit the place where he and Toothless bonded, his quiet and sacred place. Hiccup only came here when he felt overwhelmed, something that seemed to be occurring quite frequently these days. Toothless could feel his friend’s silent agony, agony that he would never let anyone, not even his own father. The Night Fury whimpered slightly as Hiccup let out an exasperated sigh.
“Why me?” the freckled Viking spat, “Why is it always me? I’m the weakest, and yet somehow I still end up taking all the big guys on! First the Red Death, then the pirate lord, then other Viking chiefs who disagree with our friendship with dragons!” He got up and hobbled back over to the river and slumped down on a rock, still muttering to himself.
Toothless whimpered again. It was true; his human always somehow did manage to take on the strongest of the strong, defeating them with what little physical strength he had. The only thing that kept him from being beaten was his mental strength, but all the mental power he had couldn’t keep him from getting injured.
Stoic and the rest of Hiccup’s clan couldn’t be more thrilled that Hiccup had turned out to be such a hero, but surely they must have noticed that every time Hiccup came back from battle, a little less came back. He had lost his left leg in the fight with Red Death. In the battle with the pirates, he had gotten a nasty scar down his chest. And now, most recently, he had lost his right eye in a battle with a Viking chief from a rival clan.
But it wasn’t the physical losses that worried Toothless so much as the emotional and mental losses. A little bit of the innocence that Toothless had seen in his friend died every time he came back from battle. Seeing the hardships of the world, the inability of others to understand, and the responsibility to keep his clan safe put on his shoulders by himself and no one else, were starting to drain him and it worried the dragon.
“Hey, Bud.”
Toothless’s ears perked up as he saw his human hobbling over. Toothless got up and raced to his side, letting Hiccup mount him. As soon as Hiccup was secure, Toothless flew off. As they soared through the clouds, Toothless heard Hiccup let out a contented sigh.
“Sorry to worry you, Bud,” Hiccup said, patting Toothless’s side, “I’m ok. Just…this eye thing is going to take a little getting use to. I never imagined I’d be where I am today; I mean, who would have ever thought I’d be the hero of Berk, complete with a missing leg and eye….listen to me complain; I’m terrible. No one is making me save the town but me and me alone. I’ll get through this, just like I always have. It’s tough, but I’ll be fine if you’re here with me.”
Toothless smiled. He could do that; he might not be able to take away Hiccup’s pains and burdens, but he would always be there to lend a paw.
