I personally think that toothless may have a chance to fly, although its unlikely for him to have front legs. When you look at bird skeletons and bat skeletons the muscles in their wings are very big, so big that there is no room for front legs. Lind of like the T-Rex to make up for the massive muscles in their jaws they lost their arms and only had little ones left over (Still strong ones due to their size) So toothless may have a chance of flight if you were to get rid of his front legs, to add on most flying animals have a small stature in comparison to wing size (So their body wont weigh them down) Toothless follows roughly the same look except his tail may be a slight bit heavy, When the producers of how to train your dragon created toothless they looked into Aerodynamics to create an accurate dragon, what they didnt account for is that their nightfury resembled that of an aeroplane, Where as Toothless is an Ornithopter type of animal. The extra tail fin on his tail aren’t very useful, on a birds wings they have extra feathers at the front of their wings which are used for fine adjustments to flight, Toothless tail couldn’t do much mode than that. Another thing is that flying animals tend to have hollow, small or delicate bones, sometimes even just cartilage, like a shark, they don’t have bones but their “Skeleton” is formed up of almost pure cartilage to make them lighter and more buoyant, it’s only logical to assume the same for the nightfury, If toothless really does have alot of cartilage for his skeleton (thus making him lighter ergo easier flight) It would explain why his tail tears off in the first movie so easy! His tail and wings are cartilage. Anyways onto the final point… Toothless flight could only be achieved hypothetically if his skeleton was A)Mostly Cartilage B)Thin and/or less dense C)Hollow bones.
To add on like said he wouldn’t be able to have front legs, if he did they would have to be of a much smaller size, if toothless legs really are small then the large feet would have to be almost pure fat,Muscle or just skin. If a Dragon were to be large it would need to be Fat. Due to Fat being less dense than muscle it would weigh less. Another reason that a dragon may only have 2 legs is because of the skeleton stucture of their wings, If you look at any flying animals wings you’ll notice the front of their chest appears to have, Shoulderblades? These are used to hold the wings in place, I’ve created a few models of Toothless on 3d Print , Plastic build etc. It’s achieved short flight but I noticed it can usually be too heavy at one end, Toothless tail would have to be smaller or lighter for it’s size. Summary:
Toothless can achieve flight if these were added/taken away:
1)No front legs
2)More cartilage instead of bone
3)A lighter tail
4)Thinner stature
5)Slightly larger wings
