I found my copy at a smaller bookstore downtown. Online would be a guaranteed place to find a book, but I don't have a credit card to order one, so I didn't have that option. I went to get another book today, actually, and started talking to the cashier about the books. Even though there were parts of the first book that weren't my thing (and still wouldn't have been even if I was in the target age) I've become addicted! There were actually some nice subtleties within it, like when Hiccup is told he can't talk to the dragons because they're animals, it's a nice moral to have, that you shouldn't treat something inferior just because you can't talk to it.
And I still fell in love with the relationship between Hiccup and Stoick. I don't know how, but there's something about them that settles into my gut and won't go away.

I hated the book. Maybe it's because I saw the movie first. Maybe it's because I'm a 25 year old girl and the book was most definately for 6-10 year old boys, but I wanted to drop kick Toothless the entire time. And I really can't take a dragon seriously if it talks like an lolcat with an accent. I honestly don't know why Dreamworks decided they wanted to turn it into a movie. Thank god they DID, but I have no idea why they picked it.

Although I'm 17, if I read the book in a 10-12 years old child's perspective, it's actually quite a good book to read. (Even though I;m actually reading the Chinese version of the book...)

I was able to pick up the first four in the series at my library (I'm actually really surprised they had them!) and personally, I loved them. Some of the characters in the book detract a LOT from their movie counterparts (two major examples are Fishlegs and Gobber), but as someone else said, I tend to see the book and movie as two separate things. I enjoyed each of them for their own special qualities.
Let's just say it got my younger brother to read. And read. annnd read some more. And not stop. Keep in mind my brother will not pick up a chapter book on his own if he can help it. And he sat there on the couch for hours on end eating up those books. ('Course, he's a BOY and a young teen, so he still fits the age bracket but STILL.)
I found Toothless in the book to be VERY annoying at times, but there was a part of me that still couldn't help but love him. <333 (Maybe because the type of dragon he is in the book, a Common or Garden, seems to resemble a Terrible Terror.... which are my second FAVE dragons in the movie next to teh Night Fury.) The illustrations got some real laughs out of me, especially. It makes me remember just how much I want to write kids' books and illustrate them. Also, Cowell's writing style is simple, yet engaging and it was a very smooth read for me.
I was upset they don't have the rest of them at my library. And I'm not gonna lie, I felt pretty stupid standing there all by myself, almost 18, in the kid's section at the library with those books in my hand.... flipping through them and giggling and smiling like an idiot. The lady at the desk who checked out my books was kinda like o_________O when I handed them to her. xDD;;
I told my mom I wanted them for Christmas. All of them.

I love that book. (the first one) Ms. Cowell's style is so.... easy to read, and fun. I thought the books were so funny, and Toothless made me laugh so much. yes, I wanted to murder him at times. But he came through in the end, and that makes me love him. XP

Bane found teh audio book. I must say, this is one of the FEW books I prefer as an audio book. This may be because her style is almost exactly like someone talking.
That and David Tennant reads it. I LOVE THE DOCTOR.

I still have yet to read the book, and I really, badly want to. DX I probably would have found it and read it before going to see the movie because I believe that if a movie is based off of a book then you should definitely read the book first. But... I didn't even know the movie was based off of a book. XD;; But yeah, I'm really wanting to read the book. And Baney Cake, I still haven't gotten the file of the audio book you sent to me to open and it angers me.

Just received the first six books... Others already on their way. I hope I'll find some spare time for them. My first attempt at reading non-butchered-by-a-french-translator books by the way... Needed to try the original feeling considering how deeply moved I have been by the movie. :3

Can we talk about HTBAP (How to Be a Pirate) here too, or should that go in a new topic?

Well well... After reading the first two, the least I can say is that it's not difficult to reckon the movie and the books as two stories of their own. If I really had to choose between them, I'd stick with the movie. Toothless is just the opposite to himself... He goes from most rare and powerful, most faithful and aaaw-cute thing ever (inducing half the movie's heart-shaking feeling), to most common, small, powerless and Mighty-Thor-Smack-Him-Annoying Selfish piece of a lizard. I like B-Toothless, for who he is. But I can't even begin to compare him to M-Toothless. They're just not even remotely related, to me. ^^ That being said, I love B-Green Death way more than M-Green Death. She... Just has brains, for a start. And a very interesting way of thinking. Disturbingly hypnotic indeed.

I've read it but it was nothing like the movie. A totally different storyline and Astrid wasn't in it at all!!!!

Just finished reading it for the third time. STILL LOVE IT!
But the more I read it, the happier that I am DreamWorks changed a lot of everything around. I would not have enjoyed a direct adaptation of these books, not matter how much I enjoy reading them... it actually bothers me...
Oh well, I love them both!

Just read it at our Borders... I enjoyed the book quite a bit, but it acted as if it was almost a combination of the movie and the post movie; they tame dragons, but they still tend to treat them poorly, especially wild ones. But it's true, Toothless is a really pain in the butt in the book, careless, selfish, etc.

The book is adorable...specially Toothless. I love the fact that he can be so spineless. XD
And GD is awesome lol. He sees himself as this philosophical monster thing. I can so see how they got inspired by his speeches for the whole Dragon Queen thing in the movie.
